Whalesong, the UAS student newspaper, is looking for student reporters for Fall 2026 & Spring 2027 semesters. UAS Whalesong reporters will cover events and issues vital to UAS. Ideal candidates will be team players with excellent writing skills, the ability to research topics, conduct interviews, write and edit accurate, fair and balanced stories, and provide visuals to illustrate their stories on the Whalesong website, Instagram and some print materials.

During the Academic Year 2026-27, all Whalesong employees have the option of hourly payment or a paid 1 – 3 credit internship, resulting in a tuition waiver. Students who choose payment will receive $14.38 per hour. Those who prefer an internship will receive academic credit and a grade for their work. All students will work under the supervision of Dr. Rosemarie Alexander-Isett, Whalesong faculty advisor.

All Whalesong employees will attend weekly meetings, must be able to meet deadlines, and may be asked to periodically promote the newspaper at UAS and Juneau community events.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be enrolled as a UAS student taking a minimum of 6 credits with a minimum GPA of 2.0 or a newly enrolled student.

This is a part-time student position is located on the UAS campus in Juneau, AK.

The Writing Center is seeking student writing tutors to work with UAS students. The job requires solid writing skills and the ability to coach students through all stages of the writing process, though we do provide training with our "grow-a-tutor" model. The Whalesong Ad Manager will oversee advertising strategies for the UAS student-run news and media organization. They will sell ads for the Whalesong website, social media pages, and any print materials. Duties include directing all advertising, developing and updating advertising materials, implementing advertising campaigns, and managing invoices/accounting for Whalesong under the direction of advisors. Personal transportation is highly recommended, as the advertising manager will interact with the larger Juneau community. Applicants will be talking with strangers about Whalesong and following up on invoices, so effective oral and written communication skills are a must. Applicants are expected to organize data and be comfortable using Microsoft Office and WordPress. This position is a wonderful opportunity for those with considerable people, sales, and organizational skills. Responsibilities include promoting Whalesong at UAS and community events, outreach to community organizations, adhering to deadlines, checking and responding to Whalesong emails, being receptive to feedback, and other duties as assigned. The advertising manager is expected to attend weekly staff meetings, with occasional evening and weekend hours. Hourly Rate: Student Assistant 2: $14.38

UAS Whalesong Editor Fall 2026 - Spring 2027

This is a great opportunity for students interested in developing their current communication skills and gaining some professional experience while taking classes. All applicants must have a 2.0 GPA and maintain enrollment in at least 6 undergraduate credit hours, or 6 graduate credit hours for student employment during the academic year.
