A professional research associate opportunity is available in the Plant Pathology and Biotechnology program, Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension at the University of Alaska Fairbanks to study: 1) interactions among plants, plant pathogens and hyperparasites at cellular, biochemical and molecular levels, and 2) etiology of diseases, their distribution and diversity in cold environment. Research will be carried out independently with intermittent direction. To thrive in the role of a Plant Pathologist as a Research Associate, the applicant should possess a strong background in plant pathology, including experience in diagnosing and identifying plant diseases, both at the molecular and field levels. Proficiency in laboratory techniques such as PCR, microscopy, and pathogen isolation is essential, as is the ability to analyze complex data and interpret research findings. Experience with disease management strategies and a solid understanding of plant–pathogen interactions will also be valuable. Additionally, the ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams, communicate effectively, and stay current with advances in plant science and emerging pathogens will be key to success in this role:

Molecular Biology/biochemistry techniques
Gel electrophoresis
DNA extraction
Transformation and/or cloning
PCR, RT-PCR
Computer and communication skills
Statistical analysis

Minimum Qualifications:

M.S. degree and two years experience in a field relevant to the research (Plant Pathology, Crop Science, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology) or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one.

Position Details:

This position is located on the Troth Yeddha' campus in Fairbanks Alaska. This is a full-time, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 79, based on education and experience.
