The UAF College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) is seeking an experienced and dedicated Financial Manager to lead our procurement and grant management team. CFOS is one of the most geographically diverse units at UAF, with locations spanning from Fairbanks to Anchorage and coastal facilities in Seward, Kasitsna Bay, and Juneau. Our College is home to over 150 faculty, researchers, and staff based throughout Alaska, and operates the R/V SIKULIAQ, a world-class research vessel that supports science throughout Alaska, the Arctic and the Pacific Ocean.
As Financial Manager, you will oversee the College’s fiscal operations and provide leadership in managing a $46 million budget, which includes state, match, recharge, restricted, and designated funds. Develop monthly management reports, financial projections, and ensure accurate closeout procedures for year-end financials. Provide financial analysis and reporting to CFOS leadership, advisory councils, and external agencies.
You will play a key role in developing financial strategies and ensuring compliance across all aspects of CFOS operations, including grant management, procurement, and oversee reporting for the R/V SIKULIAQ and other CFOS recharge centers. Additionally, you will provide support and mentorship to a diverse team of staff, ensuring the successful completion of financial goals while fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
An ideal candidate will possess a strong knowledge of governmental finance, accounting principles, and business practices, coupled with excellent interpersonal skills to effectively explain complex financial concepts to non-financial staff and faculty. Demonstrated experience in business planning, budget development, and financial monitoring systems will be essential, as well as the ability to analyze fiscal metrics for strategic planning to support the unit's financial sustainability and growth. Strong communication skills, along with the ability to lead and develop a team while managing multiple projects under tight deadlines, are crucial for ensuring timely completion of goals. Additionally, familiarity with federal, state, and university regulations relevant to fiscal activities will contribute to success in this role.
Minimum Qualifications:
At least four years management-level experience are required, preferably in an academic, medical center or research environment; demonstrated working knowledge of accounting and business practices and procedures. Demonstrated ability to assemble and analyze information for reports and special projects.
Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field and 5 years professional fiscal experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. QuickBooks experience and professional license preferred (e.g. CPA, CFM).
A valid driver's license and clean driving record in compliance with UA Safe Driving Criteria is required.
Position Details:
This position is located on the UAF campus in Fairbanks, Juneau or Anchorage and flexible on-site/remote work arrangements may be considered in accordance with UA regulations. This is a full-time, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 81, based on education and experience.
