As our Network Services and Telecommunications Student Assistant, you will play a vital part in ensuring our network operations run smoothly. Your responsibilities will include inspecting new equipment for damage and functionality, running diagnostic tests, and maintaining accurate inventory logs. You will assist with installing and troubleshooting network equipment, helping to resolve communication issues efficiently. Additionally, you will fabricate and test new cabling as needed and support Network Operations Services by managing pick-ups and deliveries using UA vehicles.
To thrive in this role, you should be a customer-oriented and adaptable individual with strong technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail. You should be comfortable working with hardware, cables, and diagnostic tools, as well as troubleshooting network and computer-related issues. A strong candidate will have knowledge of basic electronic logic, Windows and Mac operating systems, and microcomputer functionality. The ability to follow detailed technical instructions, use specialized tools, fabricate and terminate cabling (Cat-5e, Cat-6), and repair mechanical devices is essential. Additionally, effective communication and a friendly demeanor are key to assisting colleagues and customers, even in occasionally stressful situations. Physical ability to lift and move items up to 50 pounds is also required. An eagerness to learn and adapt to new technologies will ensure success in this role.

Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must be a University of Alaska student, enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits during the academic year, with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher.
Preferred experience: Customer service, technical aptitude
Prior experience is not required (OIT is willing to invest in training and career development)
A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record in compliance with UA Safe Driving Criteria as outlined in the Transportation Safety Guide.
Position Details:
This position is based on the Troth Yeddha' Campus in Fairbanks, Alaska. It is a Student Assistant 2 role, offering part-time employment of up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session, up to 40 hours per week during the summer. The starting pay is $16.00 per hour, with the hourly rate negotiable based on the applicant’s education and experience.
