Lead Aircraft Maintenance Technician

Join the University of Alaska Anchorage's Aviation Technology Division (ATD) as a qualified Lead Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic!

As a lead mechanic with ATD, you will be responsible for performing the duties of an FAA-certificated Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic conducting required maintenance, preventative maintenance, repairs, and alterations of the UAA Flight Training Aircraft including 50-hour inspections, 100-hour inspections, annual, and phase inspections in accordance with the progressive inspection program. This position is responsible for debriefing pilots concerning any aircraft malfunction. As well as running and taxiing aircraft under power, troubleshooting, diagnosing, and performing scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on assigned aircraft. Additionally, you will perform the full range of repair and testing of aircraft systems, assemblies and surfaces, determining if aircraft components require repair, replacement, or re-calibration, including researching and ordering parts as needed.

You will also exercise mechanic privileges to return aircraft to service, provide technical assistance to other UAA aviation maintenance technicians and perform inspections on UAA aircraft for continued airworthiness using methods, techniques, and practices that adhere to the Title 14 Code of Federal Aviation Regulations (CFRs) and UAA Flight Operations Maintenance Policy. You will be responsible for aircraft maintenance record entries and maintenance records to ensure aircraft are in a condition for safe operation, as required by Title 14 CFRs. You will evaluate and report on vendor or contract maintenance activities to the Director of Aircraft Maintenance. As well as maintain professional currency regarding Title 14 CFR updates and changes, maintenance procedures and techniques, airworthiness directives (ADs), advisory publications, aircraft manufacturer's publications and industry developments.

To thrive in this role, you will need strong expertise in aircraft maintenance practices, inspection procedures, and broad knowledge of Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs). As well as hands-on experience performing and coordinating maintenance to maximize efficiency and minimize downtime. You should be capable of leading and training personnel in proper ground handling of aircraft, snow and ice removal procedures, and general care requirements for all ramps and aircraft. Additionally, success in this role depends on effective problem-solving, time management, and clear communication with diverse populations.

UAA places a strong emphasis on utilizing maintenance standards and procedures which are safe and acceptable to the FAA and UAA. You will need to ensure proper safety rules and procedures are followed to comply with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) requirements to prevent injury to personnel or damage to equipment as well as ensuring that the aircraft are safe and airworthy.

Minimum Qualifications:

Combined four years supervisory and work experience in relevant trade(s), or an equivalent combination of training and experience. A two-year license, certification or degree may be required.

Valid FAA Mechanic Certificate with Airframe and Powerplant ratings.

Valid Driver's License required (must meet and maintain UA safe driver verification criteria).

Position Details:

This position is located on the Aviation Technology Complex at Merrill Field Airport in Anchorage, AK. This is a full-time, term-funded, non-exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 79, based on education and experience.
