The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is seeking a qualified and experienced Chief Mate for the R/V SIQULIAQ.

The Chief Mate serves a vital leadership role aboard the vessel, working closely with the Captain and shipboard personnel to ensure safe and efficient operations. Responsibilities include participating in voyage planning, leading safety drills, and supporting administrative functions such as payroll, procurement, inventory management, personnel coordination, and compliance with safety systems. The Chief Mate also oversees logistical planning and prepares the vessel for upcoming scientific missions.

Highly qualified applicants will have command-at-sea and dynamic positioning experience, familiarity with oceanographic research ship operations, and experience operating in high latitude and polar regions. A thorough working knowledge of policy and regulations including but not limited to: U.S. Coast Guard rules and regulations; ISM, American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) requirements and vessel stability, Maritime Laws, Hazardous Materials, MARPOL, SOLAS, OSHA regulations, and regulations and requirements as in inspected vessel under 46 CFR Subchapter U. As this role involves collaboration with many different groups, strong interpersonal skills are necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must possess the following: U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's Credential endorsed as Unlimited Tonnage Oceans Chief Mate, GMDSS Operator, and Radar Observer Unlimited. Applicants must have all applicable training as required by the Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers.

The following unexpired documents are also required: U.S. Passport, valid TWIC card, unexpired (STCW Expiration date) USCG medical certification, and a valid drivers license. Applicants must also be able to pass a pre-employment DOT drug test.

Preferred: Chief Mate or Second Mate experience, Unlimited Tonnage Oceans credential, and familiarity with azimuthing propulsion (z-drives or azipods).

Position Details:

New hires will be placed on the UA Temporary Salary Schedule, Grade 82, based on education and experience.
