Carpenter

The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), in partnership with the Directorate of Public Works (DPW) at Fort Wainwright, is seeking a full-time Carpenter (CT1) to join our skilled facilities team as part of the Environmental Community Partnership.

In this entry-level role, you will support facility operations across Fort Wainwright by performing preventative maintenance, minor repairs, inspections, construction, and rapid-response multi-craft projects. Your work will help ensure facilities and infrastructure remain safe, efficient, reliable, and sustainable while meeting established safety requirements within a military environment.

The ideal candidate will have at least one year of experience in construction, maintenance, carpentry, or a related field, along with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. This position requires the ability to safely perform physically demanding work, including lifting up to 70 pounds and working in a variety of environments where hazardous materials may be present.

To thrive in this role, applicants should have hands-on experience in carpentry, construction, maintenance, or a related field and be comfortable safely using a variety of hand and power tools. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to follow instructions, prioritize work, and work both independently and as part of a team are essential. Basic computer skills and a willingness to learn and take on a variety of facility maintenance tasks will also help you succeed in this role.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School graduate or equivalent. Requires apprentice level or other equivalent certification appropriate to the specific trade; with a minimum of three years related construction and/or carpentry experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must possess or be able to obtain within 6 months, a State of Alaska 16 Hour Certificate of Fitness and or certification for (abating) (performing operations and maintenance tasks on) asbestos containing building materials. Must be able to pass initial and annual OSHA asbestos physical.

A valid driver’s license is required. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the access clearance necessary to work on a military installation.
