The UAS Whalesong staff is looking for self-motivated, creative, and responsible student to serve as both an Editor-In-Chief and Staff Writer for the remainder of the academic year. This is a great opportunity for students interested in developing their current communication skills and gaining some professional experience while taking classes. All applicants must have a 2.0 GPA and maintain enrollment in at least 6 undergraduate credit hours, or 6 graduate credit hours for student employment during the academic year. As the primary source of UAS news, the Whalesong is responsible for keeping students informed of things happening both on and off campus. From spotlighting various student voices, campus events and issues and policies impacting students, the Whalesong serves as a platform for student and community engagement. This is a great opportunity to gain professional work experience with flexible hours, while attending classes.

Research Associate Professor of Marine Energy - Alaska Center for Energy and Power

The Alaska Center for Energy and Power (ACEP) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) is seeking a collaborative and visionary leader to serve as the co-Director of the Pacific Marine Energy Center (PMEC). PMEC is a research consortium between UAF, the University of Washington (UW) and the Oregon State University (OSU) that was established in 2008 through competitive funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). It has since expanded to include over $50M in research funding and over $240M for testing and affiliated test facilities through support from the Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Defense, the National Science Foundation, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, state agencies, and private corporations. PMEC’s mission is to connect people to the power of the ocean by responsibly advancing marine energy by expanding scientific understanding, engaging stakeholders, and educating students. This includes closing key gaps in scientific understanding, informing regulatory and policy decisions, and facilitating commercialization. At UAF, PMEC is a center within ACEP that includes multiple collaborators and students. PMEC works closely with a variety of stakeholders, including marine energy device developers, community members, ocean users, federal and state regulators, and government officials.

UAS Writing Center Student Tutor Pool 2026-2027

The Writing Center is seeking student writing tutors to work with UAS students. The job requires solid writing skills and the ability to coach students through all stages of the writing process, though we do provide training with our "grow-a-tutor" model. Perfect writing is not required, but a strong foundation and a willingness to learn are. A student tutor position is a great opportunity to improve mentoring skills, learn about tutoring/teaching strategies, and gain professional work experience. Student tutors are also involved in special projects run by the Writing Center such as writing contests and the publication of the in-house academic journal, Summit. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis and filled as positions become available.
UAS Whalesong Ad Manager Fall 2026 - Spring 2027

The Whalesong Ad Manager will oversee advertising strategies for the UAS student-run news and media organization. They will sell ads for the Whalesong website, social media pages, and any print materials. Duties include directing all advertising, developing and updating advertising materials, implementing advertising campaigns, and managing invoices/accounting for Whalesong under the direction of advisors. Personal transportation is highly recommended, as the advertising manager will interact with the larger Juneau community. Applicants will be talking with strangers about Whalesong and following up on invoices, so effective oral and written communication skills are a must. Applicants are expected to organize data and be comfortable using Microsoft Office and WordPress. This position is a wonderful opportunity for those with considerable people, sales, and organizational skills.
Responsibilities include promoting Whalesong at UAS and community events, outreach to community organizations, adhering to deadlines, checking and responding to Whalesong emails, being receptive to feedback, and other duties as assigned. The advertising manager is expected to attend weekly staff meetings, with occasional evening and weekend hours.
