This position also gives you an advantage when applying to future jobs, especially in teaching, tutoring, education, or graduate school.
Learning Assistants (LAs) are UAA students who support, guide, and assist fellow students in high demand courses. LAs are embedded in ‘gateway’ courses that are critical for students to progress in their chosen degree path. Gateway courses require students to demonstrate comprehension of course material so that they are prepared to complete other major requirements. LAs help students in these courses articulate, defend and modify their ideas by facilitating conversations, discussions, and in-class activities.
LAs work closely with their Lead Faculty (the faculty member teaching the course the LA is assigned to) and attend onboarding and training with other LAs. LAs are employees of the Learning Commons which is the home of many free peer learning services including tutoring, coaching, and more.
Available courses change every semester. This semester may have availability in: MATH, BIOL, ACCT, PHYS, STAT, PSY.
Learning Assistants facilitate discussions, group work and in-class activities among groups of students in a variety of classroom settings that encourage active engagement. This position works hand-in-hand with faculty in order to help fellow students succeed in specific courses. Learning Assistants must attend an orientation and participate in ongoing training with their fellow Learning Assistants. In addition to in-class time, Learning Assistants may also support students in their LA course outside of class time with additional duties such as holding exam study sessions, office hours and more.
