This role allows the Student Assistant to gain real-world experience performing entry-level administrative, technical, and operational tasks that support the Environmental, Health, Safety & Risk Management (EHSRM) Department. Additionally, Student Assistants will have opportunities to propose and lead projects that move EHSRM programming towards the future. Student Assistants may be asked to offer generalized support across the department, or they may be assigned to support a specific functional area of the team.
Functional areas are described below, and, as needs allow, every effort will be made to match students with a functional area that best aligns with their academic and career interests.

Working conditions may vary depending upon the Student Assistant’s assignment. Work is performed primarily in an office environment with some work occurring at other locations and/or outdoors.

Physical requirements of the job may also vary depending upon the assignment, and work can be assigned based on the selected candidate's needs and limitations. Typically, requirements include sitting or standing for extended periods, occasionally lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds, walking throughout campus facilities and outside locations year round.

Functional Areas

Environmental Affairs
The Environmental Affairs team is dedicated to ensuring our water is clean and our air is not polluted. They clean up the messes we make and dispose of our toxic waste in ways that protect the environment. This functional area is the champion of environmental stewardship!

Laboratory & Research Safety
The Lab & Research Safety team works to support the needs of our academic and research community by providing comprehensive safety programs & services that support scientific discovery, engineering ingenuity, and promotes a strong culture of safety foundation in our students, faculty, and staff. This functional area is the campus leader that every researcher and lab manager has on speed dial for guidance and advice to safely navigate the dynamic world of research and laboratory endeavors.

Occupational Safety
The Occupational Safety team serves diverse populations on campus to keep individuals safe. From planning field research to overseeing safe practices at the power plant to helping Facilities Services safely maintain our campus properties, this team is full of experts who help people assess safety hazards and design work that allows people to go home at the end of the day. This functional area is a strong advocate for safety compliance!

Risk Management
The Risk Management team consults with individuals and groups to reduce negative outcomes not covered by the other functional areas. This team strives to keep kids safe, collaborates with internal and external stakeholders, guides risk authorization processes, and offers strategic insights. This functional area is the master of living in the gray and thinking big picture!

Emergency Management
The Emergency Management team works diligently to ensure our campus is prepared for anything. They create contingency plans for natural disaster responses, seamlessly coordinate large events, and network with other community agencies to plan for the worst. This functional area is the rockstar at making sure you never know they exist, but they're always there when you need them!


To thrive in this student assistant role, one must excel in maintaining confidentiality and security, possess strong general office and clerical skills (including typing and filing), be proficient with office equipment, and possess communication skills to effectively communicate with the Kuskokwim Campus community. Attention to detail, adaptability, and a proactive approach are also key to succeeding in this position.

Minimum Qualifications:

This recruitment is open to undergraduate students only who are approved for Work Study student positions.

Must be enrolled with a minimum of 6 credit hours and have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA. Duties require considerable knowledge and skills.

Position Details:

Multiple positions available. This position is located on the UAF  Troth Yeddha' (Main) campus in Fairbanks, Alaska. This is a part-time position (up to 20 hours per week), non-exempt student position, starting at $16.20/hour.  New hires will be placed on the UA Student Salary Schedule, Grade:  Student Assistant 2.
