Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: All marine engineering positions require strong mechanical problem solving skills. Ability to be at sea for extended periods. Operational understanding of fuel oil bunkering procedures and emergency response, safe usage of basic machine and hand tools, basic math and computer skills. Knowledge of basic good seamanship practices (knots, line-handling, general shipboard maintenance and care, preparation/preservation of steel surfaces, operation of deck equipment, winches, etc). Ability to work with a diverse group of people including scientists, ship's crew and technicians. Preferred Experience & Education:
3AE - Adequate experience to have the required level of MMC. Preferred: Prefer experience on newer vessel propulsion systems and equipment. Mechanical operational and maintenance decisions, as required to safely and efficiently operate modern marine mechanical systems and equipment.

2AE - Basic operational understanding and experience working with shipboard systems, understanding of shipboard electrical systems, basic machine & hand tool safe use; basic math and computer skills. Preferred: Prefer experience on newer vessel propulsion systems and equipment. Mechanical operational and maintenance decisions, as required to safely and efficiently operate modern marine mechanical systems and equipment.
Required Experience & Education:

Qualified applicants must possess the following documents: Merchant Mariners Credential with endorsements of 3rd Assistant Engineer or 2nd Assistant Engineer and Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch. USCG Health Certificate, U.S. Passport, TWIC, and Driver's License.

Legible copies of these credentials must be submitted with this application.

Salary Information:

3AE: This is a temporary position, grade 80. Including overtime and cruise leave cash out, starting pay averages about $470/day. 

2AE: This is a temporary position, grade 81. Including overtime and cruise leave cash out, starting pay averages about $500/day.

This is a pooled position, which means that the position remains open over the entire academic year. Submitting an application does not guarantee employment. Applications will be reviewed on an as-needed basis.

If not under employment, where a random drug testing program exists, the applicant shall provide a completed test indicating they are free of illegal substance abuse, when requested by Seward Marine Center, prior to employment. Testing will be for the presence of cocaine, opiates, marijuana (THC), amphetamines and PCP (phencyclidine). Testing will be in accordance with the Department of Transportation Program and testing shall be in accordance with United States Coast Guard Drug and Alcohol Testing guidelines outlined in the Federal Register 46 C.F.R. 4, 5, and 16.
