UAA Information Technology Services is seeking a Network Engineer to support and enhance the university’s routing, switching, wireless, security, and telecommunication infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundational understanding of enterprise networking technologies and the ability to work independently on moderately complex tasks and projects. 

The Network Engineer will contribute to the stability, performance, and security of the campus and remote network environments by performing system configuration, troubleshooting, performance monitoring, and documentation. This position works under administrative supervision and may serve as a lead on small projects or specialized initiatives. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a proactive, results-driven approach are key to success in this role.

Network Engineer (Grade 80) Three or more years of demonstrated experience as a network administrator or engineer supporting routing, switching, wireless, security, and telecommunication infrastructure. Possesses a strong understanding of networking fundamentals, including subnetting, routing protocols (e.g., OSPF, BGP), SNMP, DHCP, and network performance troubleshooting. This position works under administrative supervision and may serve as a lead on projects or initiatives. The Network Engineer is expected to function as a subject matter expert in one or more technology areas, contributing to the development of solutions for moderately complex problems. Responsibilities include extensive operational support, analysis of service issues, documentation of network changes and procedures, quality assurance coordination, and identification of areas for improvement. Decisions and contributions in this role directly support departmental operations on the Anchorage campus and extend to remote community campuses and branch locations across the state, contributing to the broader mission and strategic goals of the University of Alaska Anchorage.

Senior Network Engineer (Grade 82) This position requires extensive experience in network engineering and a demonstrated ability to design, implement, and support secure, scalable, and highly available enterprise network infrastructure. The Senior Network Engineer operates under general direction and is responsible for leading strategic initiatives that support critical systems across the Anchorage campus and remote community campuses. The role includes oversight of major network projects such as migrations, architecture redesigns, and cross-campus expansions.

This position serves as a subject matter expert in one or more specialized areas and frequently leads cross-functional efforts involving technical and non-technical stakeholders. Responsibilities include managing project timelines, resources, and vendor relationships; coordinating with cybersecurity teams to enforce security and compliance requirements; and providing technical leadership and mentorship to junior and mid-level staff. Work performed in this role directly influences the availability, performance, and security of network services across the University of Alaska Anchorage.

You must work effectively with other IT team members, customers, and vendors to achieve common goals. Maintain a willingness to explore new technologies and approaches that can enhance network performance, security, and efficiency. You will need to demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills to convey technical information clearly. Be adaptable when responding to unexpected network issues or service interruptions, including occasional after-hours support when operational needs require it.

Should have:

• Strong understanding of basic networking concepts (subnetting, OSPF, DHCP, VLANs, etc.)
• Experience with network hardware from Cisco or similar vendors
• Familiarity with tools like SolarWinds, PRTG, Wireshark, or NetBox

Minimum Qualifications:

Network Engineer (Grade 80):
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Information Technology, Computer Science) and three years of progressively responsible experience in network engineering or administration, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Cisco CCNA or CCNP certification preferred.

Senior Network Engineer (Grade 82):
Master’s degree in a relevant field (i.e. Information Technology or other related field) and 4 years progressively responsible experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Cisco CCNA/CCNP certification preferred.

Position Details:

This position is located on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus in Anchorage, and flexible on-site/hybrid work arrangements may be considered in accordance with UA regulations. This is a full-time, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 80 or 82, based on education and experience.
