Ground Station Operator - Alaska Satellite Facility

The Ground Station Operators (GSOs) at the Alaska Satellite Facility monitor NASA-owned satellite-tracking antennas on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus. They oversee real-time antenna tracking, data downlinking, and command uplinking for Earth Observing Satellites. They work closely with the Ground Station Engineers and assist in troubleshooting any anomalies that arise during their shift. As a GSO, you will work four 10-hour days. The ground station is operated 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

To be successful in this role, a Ground Station Operator must have practical experience operating Windows operating systems and related software in a complex, networked, and time-sensitive environment. The GSO should also possess strong diagnostic, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills, as well as effective communication and excellent interpersonal skills. The capacity to work independently is essential, and a keen attention to detail is an important characteristic of a successful GSO.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (i.e. Information Technology or other related field) and 2 years experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

A valid driver's license and clean driving record in compliance with UA Safe Driving Criteria is required.

Position Details:

This position is full-time, Grade 79, term-funded, non-exempt, 12-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental, and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, based on education and experience.
