Facilities Student Worker

Student workers are essential to everything we do—from winter snow removal and vehicle fleet maintenance to fire safety and building inspections. We offer flexible work schedules designed specifically to fit around your classes and commitments.

Grounds and Horticulture: Operate small/medium-duty equipment (trucks, Toolcats, snow blowers), assist with snow removal and ice control, manage interior plant care and greenhouse production, and lead campus beautification. Ideal for students who love winter weather and working outdoors.

Fleet: Perform scheduled equipment inspections, routine servicing, tire changes, jump-starts, minor maintenance, and fleet data entry. Ideal for students who enjoy hands-on, mechanical work.

Electrics: Assist technicians with monthly egress testing and visual fire sprinkler inspections—every building, every month. Ideal for detail-oriented students who enjoy active variety.

General Building Maintenance: Assist technicians with rooftop upkeep—clearing vegetation and debris around roof drains and performing minor membrane and flashing repairs. All tools and equipment are provided (up to 20 hrs/week). Ideal for students who enjoy hands-on, outdoor active work and building positive working relationships across campus.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and/or Experiences: Any combination of education and experience which clearly demonstrates the skills and abilities necessary to accomplish the essential functions of the job.

To be eligible for student employment at UAA, a student must:
a. be enrolled in the university system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or
b. for employment between semesters, have successfully completed six or more UA credit hours in the preceding semester and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester; and
c. not work hours which interfere with class attendance; and
d. have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average.

NOTICE: Students must maintain enrollment and regular attendance for a minimum of at least 6 undergraduate credit hours or 6 graduate credit hours to be exempt from FICA (Social Security and Medicare) tax. A credit hour load below the minimum required for full-time student status will require the withholding of FICA tax (non-resident aliens on an appropriate visa who meet student employment criteria will continue to be exempt from FICA regardless of credit hour load). While in a student position, a student cannot hold any other type of simultaneous employment with the university.

LICENSURES: A valid AK Driver’s License and a DMV driving record meeting EHS safe driver criteria is required for the position:
1. Possess a current, valid drivers license (probationary, court restricted, international drivers’ license, or a drivers’ permit are NOT acceptable);
2. Have at least three (3) years driving experience as a licensed driver;
3. Be in compliance with the State of Alaska’s DMV licensing and insurance requirements;
4. Once employed, attend and successfully complete a campus approved drivers’ safety course;
5. Have not been convicted within the last three years for:
● Two or more moving violations.
● Two or more at fault accidents.
● Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
● A pattern of moving violations or reckless driving behavior which is demonstrated by the accumulation of more than five points against their drivers’ license.

Position Details:

This recruitment is open to undergraduate students only.

This position is located on the UAA Main campus in Anchorage. This is a part-time, student worker position. Starting pay is $18.98/hour.
