Are you interested in building a career in fire sprinkler systems and facilities maintenance? UAF Facilities Services is looking for a motivated Sprinkler Technician (MSW4) to join our team. This is a great opportunity for someone with general maintenance or plumbing experience who is interested in developing specialized skills in commercial fire sprinkler systems.

In this role, you’ll assist with the inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of wet and dry sprinkler systems, backflow preventers, standpipes, and fire pumps across the UAF campus. You’ll also support system repairs, construction and renovation projects, maintain inspection and testing records, and work alongside other Facilities Services trades and campus partners.

To thrive in this role, you should be mechanically inclined, safety-minded, and willing to learn the inspection, maintenance, and repair of fire sprinkler and other life safety systems. You should be comfortable using hand tools, reading and interpreting blueprints, following written and verbal instructions, and learning computer-based maintenance and compliance systems. Strong communication, problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively with others are important for success.

Candidates with plumbing, fire sprinkler, trade, or other related mechanical experience are encouraged to apply; however, this position is designed to provide on-the-job training and growth for candidates with basic related experience and the ability to learn the trade. Apprentice-level training or certification is preferred but not required. More advanced fire sprinkler, plumbing, or journeyman-level experience and credentials are highly desirable.

Candidates must be able to pass a CJIS background check and meet University requirements to operate Facilities Services vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications:

MSW4 - Apprentice level or equivalent certification; or a minimum of six years multi-trade experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Apprentice level or other equivalent certification appropriate to the plumbing trade; with
related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.

CT1 - May possess journeyman level certification. Requires apprentice level or other equivalent certification appropriate to the specific trade; with a minimum of three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

-Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
-NICET Level I Certification or Alaska IIB Sprinkler permit or ability to obtain either a NICET
-Level I Certification or State of Alaska IIB Sprinkler permit within one year of employment is required

Must be able to pass a CJIS background check.

This position is funded through the NSF Engines: Critical Mineral Accelerator Engine in Alaska, supported by the U.S. The National Science Foundation. The aim of this fellowship is to assist Dr. Sean Regan and Dr. Florian Hofmann in the study of critical mineral fingerprinting using U-Pb-TREE analysis from modern river catchments in Alaska.
