The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) is seeking applications for its next Budget Director. The Budget Director is UAA’s lead on all budget management and financial planning matters. This position director oversees UAA’s budget development, financial projections and unit financial reporting, and cost/revenue transfer activity. The Budget Director maintains critical relationships with peers across the UA System and UAA’s colleges, community campuses, and major departments. The Budget Director reports directly to the Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services and actively supports UA System efforts, such as the System Budget Work Team, preparation of financial reports to the Board of Regents, and responses to State and Legislative inquiries regarding UAA’s budget requests.

UAA seeks an engaging and strategic-minded person to serve as our next Budget Director. In this dynamic, fast-paced role, the Budget Director serves as a strategic and policy resource for all UAA campuses, colleges, and the University of Alaska System partners. UAA has several campuses throughout Southcentral Alaska with a combined size of over $270 million across a diverse mix of revenues. UAA’s campuses are located on the ancestral lands of the Dena’ina, Ahtna Dene, Alutiiq/Sugpiaq, and dAXunhyuu peoples.

The Budget Director is responsible for the strategic planning for UAA’s financial assets, including the development of UAA’s annual operating budget. The Budget Director maintains strong relationships with college deans, campus directors, UA System peers, ensuring UAA’s financial practices meet the needs of our academic operations. The Budget Director ensures the effectiveness of UAA’s management reporting function – a quarterly look at unit financial activity and projections for the remainder of the year.

The ideal candidate for this role should possess a master’s degree or professional registration in a relevant field, 6-8 years of progressively responsible experience. Strong preference for individuals with prior experience at a dual-mission, public university; industry peer organization involvement; and, working in an environment with a strong emphasis on shared governance.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in relevant field and six years progressively responsible experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Additional skills and abilities specific:
- Knowledge of development, monitoring and reviewing budgets.
- Proven success in leadership and management.
- Experience with process improvement methods
- In-depth working knowledge of university or public-sector fiscal policy and procedures, and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Knowledge of university org, fund, and program code structure preferred.
- Proficiency in interpreting financial data in order to provide guidance to university administration, and ability to communicate that data effectively to internal and external constituencies.
- Thorough knowledge of spreadsheet, database, and query development, such as used in Banner Finance/HR, TOAD and Excel software. Ability to create queries, produce reports, and summarize results for analysis.
- Ability to understand and interpret complex regulations, such as State of Alaska Gaming, University payroll procedures, and Board of Regents policy.

Position Details:

This is a full-time, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 84, based on education and experience.
