The University of Alaska seeks two Database and Applications Specialists to join our Enterprise Applications team. The major focuses for this role are to make the upcoming data warehouse initiatives successful, grow into a database administrator while serving as a backup database administrator, and manage some enterprise-wide tools that require an advanced skill set. On this team, you would work among a diverse set of professionals who are passionate about enabling life-changing, cost-efficient postsecondary education that adapts to the learning needs of Alaskans and pioneering visitors from around the globe.

As our Database and Applications Specialist, you will be a major primary contributor to implementing a data warehouse at the University of Alaska that makes data highly available and modernizes the current processes for accessing data across the enterprise. In this role, you will be able to develop or retain your skills as a database administrator, flex your skills of data querying and translation, work through current toolsets that help achieve data access, and manage a few focused applications that help drive success at each of the Universities.

Your teammates have a strong and varied technical knowledge and are always happy to help move you forward. We strive to keep a great work/life balance for the team and try to ensure that you can have guilt-free time away when meaningful events are happening in your life. The team cares about the organization's success and will help support your role in this.

To personally thrive in this role you should enjoy collaborating with others, be able to organize and prioritize multiple work streams, and must be driven to rise above any circumstances related to the work, taking ownership to get to an end goal by the target date. The work hours are somewhat flexible but everyone on the team is expected to work 8 hours with a break during University of Alaska (UA) business hours Monday through Friday between 7 am and 6 pm.

To technically thrive in this role you should have a strong background in working with databases, managing large datasets, managing enterprise database systems (Oracle, MS SQL, Postgresql), and managing large-scale applications that require careful and nuanced decisions about securely providing access to the data. Having an understanding of data classification, data governance, and data stewardship will contribute to success in this role.

We have a preference for candidates to be strongly connected to the university and state of Alaska so that they can participate and experience everything that the state and university have to offer. Related to this, the university offers a unique incentive for encouraging you to pursue further education with a tuition waiver. Courses, if highly aligned with your position, can also be completed during your working day. This is a great opportunity to advance your career and life goals while balancing that with work demands.

Minimum Qualifications:

The position has an expectation of a Bachelor’s or Master’s in a related discipline or equivalent experience needed for the position. Generally, this would refer to the need to have a technical understanding of how to extract, transform, and load data from one source to another, often requiring the development of custom software. The educational piece expects the degree to be in a field that would have provided sufficient knowledge to make the above technical capability possible but could have come from self-study and certifications in that related field.
Technical DBA certifications related to managing Oracle, Microsoft, or Postgresql databases could be considered sufficient.

Typically a successful candidate would have a minimum of 5 years of experience working with databases, data ETL (extract, transform, load) efforts, and management of a large application requiring data management or related data warehousing software.

Position Details:

This position can be 100% remote, candidates that have a strong connection with Alaska are preferred. This is a full-time, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental, and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 81, based on education and experience.

Please attach a resume, cover letter, and the names and contact information of three (3) professional references with your application.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until a successful candidate is identified.
Review of application materials will begin immediately. Search and selection procedures will be closed when a sufficient and viable number of qualified candidates have been identified.
