The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) is seeking a new Attending Veterinarian & Animal Resources Center Director. The UAF Attending Veterinarian (AV) is responsible for the health and well-being of all animals used at this institution. To fulfill this mission, the AV oversees the UAF Animal Resources Center (ARC) and has direct or delegated authority to ensure the adequacy of animal care and use at UAF. The AV reports directly to the Vice Chancellor for Research and is a voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The AV works closely with the IACUC and the VCR to manage our institution-wide animal care and use program. Director responsibilities include the management of all staff, programs and policies for the UAF Animal Resources Center which includes direct authority for the operation of our two main animal facilities and the University’s veterinary services core. This position will be physically located at the UAF campus in Fairbanks, Alaska.

This role requires a highly skilled professional with the ability to provide exceptional care for animals, grounded in a solid understanding of animal research best practices. The ideal candidate will possess strong written and oral communication skills, enabling effective interaction with diverse teams and stakeholders. Leadership experience is crucial, as the role involves guiding and managing a variety of employees while ensuring that all applicable standards for animal health and welfare are met. The ability to diagnose diseases or injuries, take appropriate action—including euthanasia when necessary—and prescribe medication as needed, is essential. Board certification in laboratory animal medicine or another veterinary specialty is preferred, though not required. The successful candidate will demonstrate high-level managerial and supervisory abilities, along with sound judgment, mediation, and conflict resolution skills. They will thrive under pressure, meet deadlines, and manage stress effectively. Moreover, they must have the capacity to develop a deep understanding of the ARC’s mission and operations

To thrive in the role of an attending veterinarian (AV), the applicant should possess strong expertise in animal care, including the ability to diagnose and treat diseases, injuries, and administer medications as needed. Experience in veterinary medicine, particularly in research settings, is essential for ensuring animal health and welfare standards are met. Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills are crucial for effectively managing diverse teams and collaborating with staff and stakeholders. The ability to work under pressure, make sound decisions, and prioritize resources efficiently will contribute to the success of the role. Additionally, a deep understanding of the organization’s mission and goals will enable the veterinarian to represent and advance its interests effectively.

Minimum Qualifications:

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and/or equivalent, eligibility for licensure in Alaska, six years of experience as a DVM or equivalent.

Position Details:

This position is located on the Troth Yeddha' campus in Fairbanks Alaska. This is a full-time, exempt senior administrator staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the senior administrator pay grade with a minimum salary of $80,000.00 however, salary is negotiable and based on education and experience.
