The UAA Justice Center’s Legal Studies program offers three degrees approved by the American Bar Association (ABA) Standing Committee on Paralegals: Bachelor of Arts in Legal Studies; Associate of Applied Science in Paralegal Studies; Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Paralegal Studies. Students majoring in other programs have the option of a broad-based Legal Studies minor.
As Justice Center faculty member you will work and collaborate not only with students and other Legal Studies faculty. You will also work, on a daily basis, with faculty in the Justice Center’s Criminology & Criminal Justice program, and with research staff who work in the Alaska Justice Information Center (AJiC), the Justice Center’s dedicated research unit.
The University of Alaska Anchorage Justice Center invites applications for a full-time, 9-month Term Assistant Professor of Justice (Legal Studies) position. This position will teach undergraduate courses in the Justice Center’s Legal Studies program, which includes a Bachelor of Arts in Legal Studies degree, an Associate of Applied Science in Paralegal Studies degree, and a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Legal Studies.
To be eligible for this position, applicants must be legally authorized for unrestricted employment in the United States. Work visas will not be sponsored for this position.
The UAA Justice Center, established by the Alaska Legislature in 1975, has a mandate to provide statewide justice-related education, research, and service. The Justice Center is an interdisciplinary unit that provides undergraduate and professional education; conducts research in the areas of crime, law, and justice; and provides services to government units, justice agencies, and community organizations throughout urban and rural Alaska to promote a safe, healthy, and just society.
The Justice Center is an academic and research unit within the College of Health at the University of Alaska Anchorage. We offer academic programs in Criminology and Criminal Justice and in Legal Studies. The Legal Studies degree and certificate programs are approved by the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Paralegals. Our faculty conduct research in a number of areas including violence and violent crime, law and the courts, substance abuse, rural justice issues, homelessness, policing, and juvenile justice.
To thrive in this role, the applicant must be enthusiastic and dedicated to: teaching undergraduate students about both substantive and procedural law, as well as the intricacies of paralegal practice; continually advancing their own pedagogy and teaching practice; and, embracing the totality of the faculty role within a university setting.
Minimum Qualifications:
Must hold a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from a law school approved by the American Bar Association as of the degree date, be a member in good standing of the Alaska Bar Association or of the bar association of another state, have a minimum of three years' experience in the practice of law, and have worked with or as a paralegal or other nonlawyer legal professional.
Position Details:
This position is located on the University of Alaska campus in Anchorage. This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure track, faculty position complete with both a competitive salary and and full employee benefits package. Faculty salaries are based on a variety of factors, including education and experience.
