Are you ready to significantly impact the growth and success of small businesses in Anchorage? The Alaska Small Business Development Center (SBDC) seeks a dedicated, experienced Anchorage business advisor to join our dynamic statewide team. This advisor position is a vital part of the fast-paced Anchorage Center, the busiest center in the statewide network, making the role pivotal in driving business growth and economic development in the region. As a Business Advisor, you will work one-on-one with small business owners and entrepreneurs, providing them with invaluable guidance and support across various aspects of their businesses.

The Anchorage Business Advisor position requires a strong understanding of business management principles, practices, and techniques, including financial planning, marketing, operations, and employee management, tailored to the unique needs of small businesses. Demonstrate expertise in providing actionable advice on business planning, financing, cash flow management, and overall business development. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential, with the ability to collect, analyze, and interpret complex business data to identify growth opportunities and address challenges effectively. Experience designing, developing, and delivering workshops, training materials, and presentations for diverse audiences. Oral and written communication skills are required to establish productive relationships with clients, partners, and community stakeholders. Adept at using Excel and cloud-based technology such as Google Drive. Strong organizational abilities to handle multiple priorities effectively, track client progress, and maintain detailed records in compliance with Alaska SBDC requirements.

Five years of business ownership or at least five years small business management (financial and personnel) experience is preferred. Ownership or management experience must include executive level responsibility for usual and necessary small business operational functions. Business development and financial accounting knowledge critical. Business consulting/mentoring experience are preferred.

Ability to develop materials and provide workshops for large groups. Occasional travel is required. Attendance of meetings that fall outside of the 8-5, M-F hours of operation are frequently required.

Minimum Qualifications:

● Bachelor’s degree in a related field and two years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
● Business ownership or business management (financial and personnel), with executive-level responsibility for small business operational functions.
● Critical business development and financial accounting knowledge, particularly related to small business needs.
● Experience in business consulting/mentoring, providing actionable guidance to business owners.
● Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to evaluate financial data, interpret trends, and create effective business strategies.
● Proficiency in Excel, particularly with financial projection models, and familiarity with other computerized tools (e.g., G Suite Apps, Microsoft Office, GoToMeeting/Webinar) to organize, analyze, and store information.

Position Details:

This position is located on the UAA campus in Anchorage. This is a full-time, term-funded, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 79, based on education and experience.
