Alaska Basic Education (ABE) Instructor

The Kachemak Bay Campus (KBC) of Kenai Peninsula College is looking for an Alaska Basic Education (ABE) Instructor to organize, prepare, and teach basic math, English, GED subjects, literacy, English as a Second Language (ESL), computer literacy, and life/job skills to adults, older youth, and at-risk or disabled students.

Instruction is delivered online, one-on-one, and in small groups both on campus and at outreach sites, including remote villages accessible by car or small plane. Responsibilities include assessing students’ academic levels and learning challenges, developing individualized education plans, conducting computer-assisted instruction, creating and modifying instructional materials, and maintaining compliance with state and federal grant requirements. The role also involves building relationships with local human service organizations for outreach and referrals, maintaining detailed student records, and participating in ongoing professional development.

The ideal candidate will possess excellent written and oral communication skills, a strong understanding of adult learners and at-risk youth, and the ability to adapt teaching methods to diverse learning needs. Experience teaching or tutoring English, math, or ESL both online and in-person is required, as is experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage student data and files are essential. Preferred qualifications include experience with instructional technology, adult basic education, and collaboration with human service agencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's in education, social science, human services, or related field and one year experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Driver's License required for travel to outreach sites and a driving record that meets in compliance with UA Safe Driving Criteria.

Position Details:

This position is located on the Kachemak Bay campus of Kenai Peninsula College located in Homer.  This is a part-time, non-exempt, term staff position that will work 30-hours per week during the academic year (mid-August thru mid-May) and will be off contract during the summer.  The position comes complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 78, starting at $25.55 per hour based on education and experience.
