Summer Engineering Academies Assistant Director

The UAA Summer Engineering Academies (SEA) are a series of week-long, hands-on educational day camps for students entering grades 3 through 12. Each week explores a different topic. Camp topics include structural engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, robotics, and more. Each academy is designed to be fun and educational to encourage interest in and provide exposure to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

This SEA Assistant Director position will ideally be filled by a UAA student from the College of Engineering or the School of Education, though students with previous experience in robotics, coding, or working with minors will be considered. This position will teach science and engineering concepts to participants, work with participants in small groups to develop solutions to engineering problems (construct bridges, build robots, etc.), assist with setup and take down of facilities each session, maintain a positive and safe atmosphere for minors, and other duties as assigned by the Director. The SEA Assistant Director will be a second year assistant instructor.

To thrive in the SEA Assistant Director role, applicant must be knowledgeable about a variety of engineering disciplines and passionate about sharing knowledge. This position requires the ability to work with minors, having patience and an appreciation of younger students, with an awareness of your position and influence as a role model. Previous mentoring or teaching experience with the summer camp or equivalent experience of a second year staff member is required. The ability to direct peers, effectively communicate and problem solve are also required.

Minimum Qualifications:

To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must:

a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or
b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and
c. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or have approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee.

Position Details:

This is a student position located on UAA's main campus in Anchorage, AK. The work schedule will be up to 20 hours per week during the spring while classes are in session and 40 hours per week during the summer. Pay is $18.00/hour.
