We are announcing a postdoctoral scholar opportunity in the area of Arctic Climate Dynamics at the International Arctic Research Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). The candidate will contribute to an NSF-funded project titled “Atmospheric controls of moisture extremes over Greenland,” and will work closely with project leaders Tom Ballinger (PI) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and Qinghua Ding (co-PI) at the University of California, Santa Barbara to examine large-scale atmospheric processes related to moisture transport across Greenland and the broader Arctic. The candidate will run simulations with climate models to identify large-scale Arctic climate dynamics associated with moisture transport events, including atmospheric rivers, in historical and future projections. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate on project-related activities, including leading manuscripts, presenting at conferences, and developing interactive tools related to the project.

Conferral of a Ph.D. degree in atmospheric science, oceanography, or similar field is required by the position start date. Desired skills include experience running a numerical model such as a global or regional climate model or idealized and conceptual models with moderate complexity, ability to process and analyze large datasets, a record of publishing in high-caliber academic journals.

Possess a strong publication record and ability to communicate research findings effectively.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
Possess excellent English written and verbal communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph. D. in atmospheric science, oceanography, or a similar field is required. Must possess terminal degree prior to the start of position. Experience running climate models and publishing in high-caliber journals. Experience processing and analyzing large climate datasets.

Position Details:

This position will located on the Troth Yeddha' campus in Fairbanks, Alaska. This position has a flexible appointment and on-site, hybrid or remote work options may be considered on a case-by-case basis and in accordance with UA regulations. Positions are full-time, exempt post doctoral faculty position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. The starting salary will be based on education and experience.

The position target start date is flexible but can begin in Spring 2025 and runs for at least one-year withe a possible extension contingent upon satisfactory progress and availability of funds.
