As the Platform, Applications and Web Services (PAWS) Manager, you will have the ability to shape and guide the direction of future technologies that the University adopts to deliver enterprise grade services to our students, faculty and staff across 3 Universities including their rural campuses:

The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA)
The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF)
The University of Alaska Southeast (UAS).

To help you deliver results and be successful, you will have a strong team reporting to you, the Platforms, Applications and Web Services (PAWS) team. This experienced team is responsible for the development and management of critical infrastructure, systems and tools that the University of Alaska system depends upon to run the business-critical applications.

The work culture in this team includes a healthy, guilt-free work-life balance and most of the team members work remotely from home. The team works Alaska business hours and uses a variety of tools to stay engaged and productive.

The ideal candidate for this role will feel rewarded when the team is successful, and should be able to demonstrate a track record of nurturing and driving an IT team to advance and grow. They will also enjoy working on a variety of projects and initiatives, be comfortable working with stakeholder groups, have a partnership approach, and a problem-solving mindset.

This role is for a people manager AND a technical leader, a rare but essential combination of skills that will enable the IT team to thrive and fulfill its long-term strategic goals. These skills include building a high performing team with enterprise-level skills to support enterprise-grade infrastructure and applications.

The university is in the process of a modernization initiative directed by the Board of Regents. This includes driving as much automation as possible, and re-imagining existing processes with an agile, process-improvement mindset as well as evaluating new technologies that will enable the university systems to be more stable, scalable and efficient.

Minimum Qualifications:

In this technical role, a degree(s) in Computing or a related field, along with 10 years of proven experience in building and managing successful, high-performing IT teams, or an equivalent combination of training and experience is required.

Technical skills required to manage a wide range of technologies including:

  • Database administration
  • Data warehouse and enterprise reporting
  • Data backup and recovery
  • Storage solutions, physical and virtual
  • VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure)
  • Cloud solutions
  • On-premise equipment
  • Business Productivity tools
  • Directory Services
  • Web design and hosting platform
  • Information Technology Service Management (ITSM) systems and processes including ticketing, change management, root cause analysis (RCA), Tier 3 support, and incident management.
  • Evaluating/recommending new and emerging technologies
  • Tool Implementation and Configuration
  • License management
  • Automation and integrations
  • Alerting, Notifications management
  • System uptime Dashboard

Position Details:

This position is 100% remote. If relocation to Alaska is possible, then a relocation allowance is available, but relocation is not required. This position is ideal for candidates who have ties to Alaska or who have the strong Alaska pioneering, can-do mindset. This is a full-time, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and a full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 84, based on education and experience.
