The investigator position at the University of Alaska Fairbanks' Office of Diversity and Equal Opportunity conducts inquiries and investigations to evaluate compliance with University policies, procedures, and programs on equal opportunity, discrimination, affirmative action, discriminatory harassment, sexual misconduct, retaliation, employee conduct and ethics.
The investigator is part of a team of four workplace investigators examining reports utilizing a trauma-informed approach, acting as a neutral third party throughout all aspects of the workplace investigative process ensuring a well-documented, prompt, and fair handling of the report. This position will work closely with clients, stakeholders, Dean of Students Office, Office of Human Resources, Office of Residence Life, Office of Research Integrity and others throughout campus, as necessary.
We are seeking a candidate with exceptional critical thinking and judgment skills, with a proven ability to analyze and apply legal and policy standards to a variety of situations. The ideal candidate will have strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to prioritize and manage multiple high-stakes projects, meet deadlines, and maintain detailed records with minimal supervision.
Cultural competence and sensitivity are essential, as is the ability to conduct investigations with a trauma-informed approach. Candidates must demonstrate independence and impartiality, exercising sound judgment even in highly emotional or complex scenarios.
Strong interpersonal skills are required to work effectively both independently and as part of a busy team. The role demands calm, professional handling of sensitive and confidential matters, and the ability to adapt to a complex organizational environment. Flexibility is crucial, with a willingness to travel and work evenings or weekends as needed.
Proficiency in MS Excel and Word is required. The candidate should possess strong conflict resolution, problem-solving, interviewing, and investigative skills. Prior experience in gathering facts and an ability to clearly and effectively present ideas are essential, along with a commitment to managing sensitive information with discretion and sound judgment.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of training, along with at least two years of investigatory experience. A preference will be given to individuals who hold a J.D. with demonstrated evidence/fact gathering experience requiring interviews.
Experience conducting interviews, investigations and/or fact gathering. Experience with compiling information and/or data into written reports.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience: Experience in higher education, legal, law enforcement, employment, journalism, or regulatory compliance settings (or substantially related areas).
Position Details:
This is a full-time, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 79, based on education and experience.
