We are looking for an experienced and detail-oriented Database Administrator to join the University of Alaska, Office of Information Technology, Platform, Applications and Web Services (PAWS) team. In this role, you will apply your expertise in both information systems and scientific or technical disciplines to design, implement, and maintain complex database environments. You will be responsible for database upgrades, infrastructure management, and performance optimization, ensuring seamless access and functionality for users. Key responsibilities include analyzing technical feasibility, troubleshooting database issues, managing SQL queries, and leading cross-departmental projects. You will collaborate with stakeholders to track project progress, communicate updates, and provide expert guidance on database development. Additionally, you will mentor and transfer knowledge to IT staff and end users, document and lead meetings, and ensure efficient resource coordination.
As a senior advisor, you will consult on innovative solutions, oversee project teams, and serve as a key technical resource within the department. To thrive in this role, you should have proven experience and proficiency in supporting major databases (Oracle and Microsoft SQLServer). You will bring both theoretical and practical knowledge of database administration. Strong analytical and development experience within large and complex computing environments, including both classic and web technologies, is essential. Additionally, you should possess excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, be highly organized, and work effectively with minimal supervision. Demonstrated experience managing projects in a complex IT environment is important, along with a keen interest and ability to stay current with emerging technologies.
Minimum Qualifications:
A Bachelors degree in a related discipline or equivalent experience.
5+ years (minimum) of relevant experience in a broad range of complex software engineering projects and/or assignments using client/server and web technologies.
Experience with the following: Oracle databases and architecture; iterative life cycle development; Use Cases; SQL programming; General programming languages; UNIX and Windows operating systems; Microsoft Excel, Word, Project.
Position Details:
This position can be 100% remote, candidates who have a strong connection with Alaska are preferred. This is a full-time, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental, and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 82, based on education and experience.
