College of Engineering Summer Engineering Academy Staff - First/Second Year

The UAA Summer Engineering Academies is a summer camp program for youth entering grades 3rd through 12th. Each week explores a different topic. Camp topics include structural engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, robotics, and more. Each session is designed to be fun and educational.

The UAA Summer Engineering Academies are a series of week-long, hands-on educational day camps for students entering grades 3 through 12. Each academy is designed to encourage interest in and provide exposure to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The Academy staff first year positions will ideally be filled by UAA students from the College of Engineering or the School of Education, though students with previous experience in robotics, coding, or working with minors. The positions will teach science and engineering concepts to youth, work with youth in small groups to develop solutions to engineering problems (construct bridges, build robots, etc.), assist with setup and take down of facilities each session, and maintain a positive and safe atmosphere for minors. The position requires patience, and other duties as assigned by Director and Lead Instructors.

The Academy staff second year positions will ideally be filled by UAA students from the College of Engineering or the School of Education as well. The positions will teach science and engineering concepts to participants and will work with participants in small groups to develop solutions to engineering problems (construct bridges, build robots, etc.), assist with setup and take down of facilities each session, and other duties as assigned by Director and Lead Instructors.

First Year

To thrive in the Academy staff first year role, applicants must be knowledgeable about a variety of engineering disciplines (or willing to learn) and passionate about sharing knowledge. This position requires energy, creativity, and maturity. It requires the ability to work with minors, the understanding of influence as a role model, and it is preferred that applicants have prior experience mentoring, teaching, or working with youth.

Second Year

To thrive in the Academy staff second year role, applicants must be knowledgeable about a variety of engineering disciplines and passionate about sharing knowledge. This position requires the ability to work with minors, being patience and appreciation of younger students, and awareness of position and influence as a role model. Previous mentoring or teaching experience with the summer camp of equivalent experience of a second year staff member.

Minimum Qualifications:

To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must:

a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or
b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and
c. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA), be in good academic standing, or have approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee.

This position requires the ability to lift 50 lbs.

Position Details:

This position is located on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus in Anchorage. This is a student worker position. The employment period is mid-May to early August. The work schedule will be 40 hours per week throughout the summer.

Staff First Year pay is $12.52/hr. - $15.26/hr., depending on experience.

Staff Second Year pay is $15.26/hr. - $18.00/hr., depending on experience.

This is a pooled position, which means that the position remains open over the entire academic year.
