The UAA Summer Engineering Academies are a series of week-long, hands-on educational day camps for students entering grades 3 through 12. Each academy is designed to encourage interest in and provide exposure to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Each week explores a different topic. Camp topics include structural engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, robotics, and more. Each session is designed to be fun and educational.

The positions will teach science and engineering concepts to youth participants, work with participants in small groups to develop solutions to engineering problems (construct bridges, build robots, etc.), assist with setup and take down of facilities each session, and maintain a positive and safe atmosphere for minors. The position requires patience, and other duties as assigned by Director and Lead Instructors.

To thrive in this role, applicants must be knowledgeable about a variety of engineering disciplines (or willing to learn) and passionate about sharing knowledge. This position requires energy, creativity and maturity. It requires the ability to work with minors, patience with and appreciation of younger students, and an understanding and awareness of influence as a role model. Previous mentoring or teaching experience with a summer camp or equivalent experience helpful.

Minimum Qualifications:

Staff Level 1: Current high school student and at least 16 years old

Staff Level 2: High school graduation and 6 months' experience in relevant field or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Staff Level 3: 1 year's relevant college coursework and 1 year's experience in relevant field, or equivalent combination training and experience.

Staff Level 4: 2 years' relevant college coursework and 2 years' experience in relevant field, or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Staff Level 5: 3 or more years' relevant college coursework and 3 years' experience in relevant field, or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Staff Level 6: Bachelor's degree in relevant field and 4 years' experience, or equivalent combination of training and experience.

This position requires the ability to life 50 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation.

Position Details:

This position is located on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus in Anchorage. This is a temporary staff position. The employment period is mid-May to early August. The work schedule will be 40 hours per week throughout the summer.

New hires will be placed on the UA Temporary Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 73. Higher salary placement possible depending on education and experience.
