ANSEP is seeking an Assistant Director to plan and manage Acceleration special events and Summer program.

The Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program (ANSEP) is a program for students ranging from middle school to secondary students to degree seeking students at the University of Alaska. The ANSEP Acceleration supports dual enrollment high school students who are taking college courses. In addition to college coursework, students are required to attend recitations for most classes and are involved in a variety of academy components that include the following: hands-on modules covering a wide cross-section of STEM topics, team building exercises, social activities, field trips, and exposure to Alaska Native cultures. Students involved in ANSEP have opportunities to explore STEM careers and network within the STEM field and other professionals.

The Assistant Director of Summer Programs & Special Events position serves all Acceleration sites across the state planning, administering, monitoring, and evaluating all aspects of ANSEP Acceleration programs including daily activities for events. The Assistant Director will lead staff work groups to develop, implement and manage activities including prom, Career Exploration Week, senior graduation, student orientation and summer residential academy sessions. In close collaboration with site directors, the Assistant Director will lead the hiring, supervision, and scheduling of staff for up to five activities/events annually. They will identify and address staff issues including mediating interpersonal conflict. In coordination with Site Directors and leadership the Assistant Director of Summer Programs & Special Events will establish and ensure compliance with rules, regulations, processes, policies, and procedures. They will develop, track and carry-out a budget of $800,000 annually. This position is responsible for running the Acceleration Summer program with input from the Acceleration Senior Director and site Directors.

To excel in this role, the applicant should possess strong program planning, decision making, and problem-solving skills, as they will be developing, coordinating and overseeing events for up to 300 students. The applicant should have excellent time management and organization skills as they will be managing multiple projects with overlapping deadlines. The applicant should have leadership or administrative experience as well as conflict resolution skills as they will be hiring, supervising, and leading staff. The applicant should have strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders, work independently and as part of a team. The candidate should have the ability to interpret and apply complex policies, rules, and regulations. The successful candidate would have an affinity for working with and managing children.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in related field and five years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Demonstrated at least one year of experience with – program planning/program administration and staff hiring and supervision. At least 3 years of experience with Summer Camps or working with children ranging in ages 11-18. Experience coordinating and managing events.

Position Details:

This position is located on the UAA campus in Anchorage. This is a full-time, term-funded, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 80, based on education and experience.
