Assistant Professor of History, Tenure Track - College of Liberal Arts

The University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Liberal Arts, Department of History is seeking qualified applicants with expertise on the circumpolar North, Indigenous or European History. The responsibilities of this position support the University of Alaska Fairbanks' tripartite mission of teaching, research, and service. Teaching responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses in History and graduate courses in the Arctic and Northern Studies Program, and mentoring students. Additional duties may include teaching survey courses in Global or European History.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of History invites applications for a tenure-track position (nine-month appointment) at the level of Assistant Professor beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year. 

The successful applicant will be qualified to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels; teach survey courses in European, Indigenous, North American (Canadian), Circumpolar, or Global History; and mentor graduate students in the Arctic and Northern Studies (ACNS) Program. We are especially interested in applicants who bring complementary areas of expertise that will diversify our course offerings in History and Arctic and Northern Studies. Complementary areas of expertise that particularly interest the department are the circumpolar North, Indigenous, Europe, Greenland and Canada. 

The University of Alaska Fairbanks History Department offers a BA in-person and online. We teach modern European, US, and East Asian History with broad expertise in the circumpolar North. The History Department is closely affiliated with the Arctic and Northern Studies Program, which is a growing interdisciplinary area studies program that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees.

 To thrive in this position applicants should be scholar-educators and public intellectuals with a sense of adventure and willing to serve our community, state, and University.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience teaching at the university level.
Experience conducting research, publishing, and teaching that reflects expertise in Indigenous history.
Experience teaching survey courses as well as graduate seminars. Demonstrated potential for excellence in research.

PhD in History or related field at time of appointment. The committee will consider applicants who are all but dissertation (ABD), but candidates must have their earned their PhD at the time of appointment.
