Whalesong, the UAS student newspaper, is looking for student reporters for Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semesters. As the primary source of UAS news, the Whalesong is responsible for keeping students informed of things happening both on and off campus. From spotlighting various student voices, campus events and issues and policies impacting students, the Whalesong serves as a platform for student and community engagement. This is a great opportunity to gain professional work experience with flexible hours, while attending classes.

About the Whalesong:
Whalesong is the news publication for the University of Alaska Southeast. We produce weekly digital and audio content for distribution throughout the Juneau campus and within the community. Whalesong serves as a platform for student and community voices and is dedicated to honest and ethical journalism.

A successful candidate will encompass the following skills & abilities: 

  • Ability to write and edit publishable articles or columns with attention to grammar, Associated Press style, spelling, clarity, accuracy, and thorough reporting.
  • Ability to prepare, develop, and/or repackage content for use in other media
  • Ability to collect audio recordings of interviews, events, or other subject matter for use in weekly podcast. (Technology will be provided)
  • Ability to edit audio segments for the editor.
  • Familiarity with word processing and knowledge of news gathering techniques, the First Amendment, Freedom of Information Act, and media ethics.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Candidates will receive paid training for above skills and abilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be enrolled as a UAS student taking a minimum of 6 credits with a minimum GPA of 2.0 or a newly enrolled student.

Position Details:

This is a part-time, 8 hours a week, student employment position. Hourly rate of $14.38/hr.

The review process for applications will be begin on May 1st, 2024 through May 3, 2025. Hours will be determined with supervisor based on student schedule and availability. Student employees are not required to work during holidays, campus closures, or finals week.
