Learning Assistants (LAs) are UAA students who support, guide, and assist fellow students in high demand courses. LAs are embedded in ‘gateway’ courses that are critical for students to progress in their chosen degree path. Gateway courses require students to demonstrate comprehension of course material so that they are prepared to complete other major requirements. LAs help students in these courses articulate, defend and modify their ideas by facilitating conversations, discussions, and in-class activities.

LAs work closely with their Lead Faculty (the faculty member teaching the course the LA is assigned to) and attend onboarding and training with other LAs. LAs are employees of the Learning Commons which is the home of many free peer learning services including tutoring, coaching, and more.

Available courses change every semester. This semester may have availability in: MATH, BIOL, ACCT, PHYS, STAT, PSY.

Learning Assistants facilitate discussions, group work and in-class activities among groups of students in a variety of classroom settings that encourage active engagement. This position works hand-in-hand with faculty in order to help fellow students succeed in specific courses. Learning Assistants must attend an orientation and participate in ongoing training with their fellow Learning Assistants. In addition to in-class time, Learning Assistants may also support students in their LA course outside of class time with additional duties such as holding exam study sessions, office hours and more.

A successful candidate for this position should:
● Be reliable, dependable, committed, and able to attend and participate in all shifts, meetings, and trainings
● Have the ability to effectively communicate and work well with students, peers, staff, and faculty
● Be willing to learn, give and receive feedback, and have a growth mindset
● Be eager to support their peers and help them learn without simply providing answers
● Be a positive, encouraging, and supportive academic model for students in class

As a Learning Assistant you will:
● Attend and participate in the course classes and/or labs where you are assigned
● Attend and participate in required Learning Commons orientation, trainings and meetings
● Meet with Lead Faculty and LAs from the same course
● Perform other duties as assigned by the LA Program Director or Lead Faculty

Some experience tutoring, coaching, teaching, mentoring or working well with others is preferred. Typically, a successful LA has previously passed the course or taken similar courses to the one they are an LA for.

Minimum Qualifications:

● Must be enrolled at UAA with a minimum of six (6) credit hours in the semester of employment
● Must have completed at least one semester at UAA
● Must be in good disciplinary standing with the university
● Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher for this position

Upon hire, completion of the following UAA Employee e-Learning Trainings is required:
● FERPA: Protecting Student Privacy
● Title IX
