The University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Liberal Arts, Department of History is seeking qualified applicants with expertise on the circumpolar North, Indigenous, North American or European History for a term assistant position (nine-month appointment) at the level of Term Assistant Professor for the 2024-2025 academic year beginning in August 2024. The responsibilities of this position support the University of Alaska Fairbanks' tripartite mission of teaching, research, and service. Teaching responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses in History and graduate courses in the Arctic and Northern Studies Program, and mentoring students. Additional duties may include teaching survey courses in Global or European History.

The UAF History Department is a small, cohesive faculty unit within the College of Liberal Arts. The successful applicant will teach both undergraduate and graduate courses at the university level in different modalities. They must have a commitment to the students and the ability and willingness to collaborate with faculty within the department, the College and throughout the University.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks History Department offers a BA in-person and online. We teach modern European, US, and East Asian History with broad expertise in the circumpolar North. The History Department is closely affiliated with the Arctic and Northern Studies Program, which is a growing interdisciplinary area studies program that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in History or related field at time of appointment. The committee will consider applicants who are all but dissertation (ABD), but candidates must have earned their PhD at the time of appointment (August 2024). The successful applicant will be qualified to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, with potential to teach survey courses in European, Indigenous, North American (Canadian), Circumpolar, or Global History; and mentor graduate students in the Arctic and Northern Studies (ACNS) Program. 

Teaching experience at the college level.

We are especially interested in applicants who bring complementary areas of expertise that will diversify our course offerings in History and Arctic and Northern Studies. Complementary areas of expertise that particularly interest the department are the circumpolar North, Indigenous, Europe, Greenland and Canada. 

Position Details:

This position is located on the University of Alaska Fairbanks Troth Yeddha' campus in Fairbanks, Alaska. This is a full-time, term, faculty position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package.
