The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) seeks an exceptional candidate to join their technical team to support the nation’s flagship ice-capable research vessel, the R/V Sikuliaq. Join our team and dive into the exciting world of cutting-edge marine research!

R/V Sikuliaq, pronounced [see-KOO-lee-auk], is a 261-foot oceanographic research ship capable of bringing scientists to the ice-choked waters of Alaska and the polar regions. Sikuliaq, one of the most advanced university research vessels in the world, is able to break ice up to 2.5 feet thick. Constructed in Marinette, Wisconsin, Sikuliaq is homeported in Seward, Alaska, at UAF's Seward Marine Center.

As a Shipboard Science Systems Engineer, you'll work closely with scientists from varying institutions and backgrounds to ensure that their research needs are met. Your responsibilities will include the development, installation, operation, and maintenance of shipboard scientific instrumentation, as well as providing technical and liaison support to multidisciplinary and multi institutional oceanographic research projects. This is a seagoing position and is located on board the R/V Sikuliaq, wherever it may be operating.

The ideal candidate will have familiarity and experience with scientific instrumentation and shipboard support systems. As this role involves collaboration with many different groups, strong interpersonal skills are necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

The successful applicant should possess a BS / BA in engineering science / physical science (or sufficient experience), two years of experience providing technical support and seagoing experience. A valid passport, a TWIC card (or the ability to obtain one), and a valid driver's license and clean driving record in compliance with UA Safe Driving criteria are also required.
