The University of Alaska Fairbanks is a top research university in the circumboreal north, and is on the leading edge of addressing agricultural production and invasive species issues in a changing northern climate. This position is located in Palmer, or Fairbanks with the Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension, and has access to three research farms in Fairbanks, Delta-Junction, and Palmer Alaska. Programs in the institute have a long history of working with agricultural producers of many commodities, incorporating cover crops, pest and weed management in agricultural and forest settings. The projects associated with this position will directly benefit agricultural production and wildland weed management. Initially projects focus on managing non-target impacts of persistent herbicides, and manipulating pest and beneficial insect populations with the use of cover crops. The Institute is always pursuing grants to support additional work providing opportunity to be working on a diverse array of specific topics related to invasive and agricultural pest and weed management. The position will be a part of a well established integrated pest management team of faculty and staff that work on weed and pest management issues in crop production and wildlands including topics such as herbicide fate, development of insect IPM tactics, and tracking the occurrence of insect pest and weeds in Alaska. This exciting position will work for the Institute of Natural Resources and Extension with an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Project that is solving pest and invasive plant problems facing agricultural and natural resources in Alaska. Our program is leading the way in finding management solutions, and studying the impacts of management of pests and invasive species. The immediate focus of this position is to provide day to day management of research projects aimed at developing IPM strategies for management cabbage root maggot populations with the use of cover crop mixes, and management of the fate of persistent herbicides in small grain to potato crop rotations. Opportunities are available to work on several other projects including invasive moth monitoring, trials for introduction of biocontrol agents, and assessing the efficacy of invasive species control in wildland settings.

To thrive in this role applicants must have a strong desire to perform field work in agricultural and wildland settings in Alaska, including some lab work. Strong organizational skills to develop timelines prioritizing multiple tasks to ensure each part of complex projects are achieved. The applicant should have a strong desire to identify insects and plants and learn whichever they are deficient in.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors degree or equivalent experience in entomology, agriculture, horticulture, biology, natural resources or similar field with experience participating in research projects, and data management.

Position Details:

This position can either be located in Fairbanks or Palmer Alaska, depending on the applicants location. This is a full-time, term-funded, non-exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 78, based on education and experience.
