The Alaska Fire Science Consortium (AFSC) works directly with Alaska's interagency fire management community and researchers investigating fire science topics in Alaska's rapidly changing fire environment to improve communication and support management decisions with the best available science. The coordinator is a vital member of the multifaceted AFSC team, supporting activities in both research development and science delivery to make a real difference in how science is used. Core activities involve coordination and communication between researchers and wildfire managers in Alaska, including the Alaska Wildland Fire Coordinating Group and its sub-committees. The person in this position will be responsible for implementing and organizing webinars, workshops, and written products developed in collaboration with research teams, management leaders, and other AFSC staff. AFSC is part of the Joint Fire Science Program's national Fire Science Exchange Network, offering the coordinator the support of a network of peers doing similar work across the country.

Demonstrated strong experience working in wildfire science, wildfire management, wildfire research or related field of two or more years. The person hired for this position will be expected to apply a broad understanding of fire science and management to initiate outreach and delivery activities and facilitate two-way communication between fire scientists and fire managers. S/he will be expected to independently evaluate and meet complex program needs and integrate multiple components as a specialist in fire science outreach and delivery.

To thrive in this position as a research professional you must possess outstanding organizational, written and oral communication skills; attention to detail, problem solving skills abilities. You must have an interest and experience in fire research, suppression and/or management, and the ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously and to meet deadlines. Other additional special skills/knowledge needed for this position may include the need for travel to meetings and workshops within Alaska and to the Lower 48 and a demonstrated interest and experience in fire science research, suppression, management and outreach in Alaska;

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree and two (2) years of research experience at the postgraduate level in fire science or related field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience in fire suppression, management and /or fire science research.

Position Details:

This position is located on the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) campus in Fairbanks. A flexible on-site and/or a hybrid or fully remote within Alaska work arrangement may be considered in accordance with UA regulations and as suitable for the position. It is an exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 80, based on education and experience. There is the possibility that the hiring supervisor would consider either a full-time or part-time assignment.
