R/V Sikuliaq, pronounced [see-KOO-lee-auk], is a 261-foot oceanographic research ship capable of bringing scientists to the ice-choked waters of Alaska and the polar regions. Sikuliaq, one of the most advanced university research vessels in the world, is able to break ice up to 2.5 feet thick. Constructed in Marinette, Wisconsin, Sikuliaq is homeported in Seward, Alaska, at UAF's Seward Marine Center.

We are currently accepting applications for temporary relief crewmembers in the Deck Department, including 2nd Mate, 3rd Mate, and AB (-Special or higher). The temporary reliefs will fill in when the regular crew are on shore. Applications will be reviewed on an as-needed basis.

Applicants should possess the following:

2nd Mate:
Knowledge of chart plotters, GPS, GMDSS, radar, celestial or terrestrial fixes, navigational aids, ships logs and records. Ability to steer correct courses, and maneuver ships. Ability to ensure that the proper procedures and safety practices are followed. Advanced knowledge or navigation and weather routing is required. Knowledge of and ability to interpret regulations from the following: U.S. Coast Guard, National Science Foundation, UNOLS and UAF, 33CFR, 46 CFR, SOLAS, IMO, and MARPOL.

3rd Mate:

Ability to ensure that the proper procedures and safety practices are followed. Knowledge of shipboard safety systems and equipment. Knowledge of and ability to interpret regulations from the following: U.S. Coast Guard, National Science Foundation, UNOLS and UAF, 33CFR, 46 CFR, SOLAS, IMO, and MARPOL.

AB Special (or higher):
Advanced and pertinent knowledge and experience with safely over-boarding and recovering equipment at sea. Advanced deck equipment skills: crane, winch, davit and small boat launch, recovery and operation. Knowledge of life raft equipment and able to assume the duties of the cox'n or man in charge of the life raft or rescue boat. Experience in preventive maintenance of deck equipment, ship maintenance and upkeep, proper methods of prep/paint work, inventory of painting and preservation equipment. Line handling and warping during berthing and departing movement of vessels; rigging and handling of deck equipment and supplies. Small boat handling, proficiency as a rigger, loads and rigging/un-rigging ladders, brows, and gangways. Ability to create electronic documents and inventory spreadsheets. Stand navigation bridge watches at helm and lookout, and in port security watches. Adaptability to apply knowledge and skill to perform other mission-related duties as assigned, including duties related to the safety of the vessel and personnel. Ability to develop and maintain a positive working relationship with all vessel and visiting personnel.

Minimum Qualifications:

2nd Mate: One year of experience as 3rd Mate on unlimited tonnage vessels. Prefer experience on research vessels, vessels with azimuthing thrusters, and dynamic positioning systems.

3rd Mate: One year of experience as AB or 3M on unlimited tonnage vessels. Prefer experience on research vessels, vessels with azimuthing thrusters, and dynamic positioning systems.

AB Special or higher: Prefer prior experience as an AB on vessels where deploying and retrieving gear over the side is routinely required. Graduation from a maritime academy with a license of 3M unlimited may be substituted for previous AB experience.

Applicants must have a U. S. Coast Guard (USCG) Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC) endorsed for qualified rating that is being applied for: 2nd Mate: Any Gross Tons Upon Oceans with endorsements of Radar Observer Unlimited, GMDSS, VI/1, VI/2, VI/3, VI/4, VI/6. STCW Rating I/2, II/1 II/3.
3rd Mate: Any Gross Tons Upon Oceans with endorsements of Radar Observer Unlimited, GMDSS, VI/1, VI/2, VI/3, VI/4, VI/6. STCW Rating I/2, II/1 II/3.
Able Seafarer: -Special (or higher) and RFPNW endorsements; Rating: I/2, II/4, VI/1, VI/6, I/9.

The following unexpired documents are also required for ALL applicants: U.S. Passport, TWIC card, unexpired (STCW Expiration date) USCG medical certification, and a valid drivers license. Applicants must also be able to pass a pre-employment DOT drug test.

Position Details:

New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 77 (AB), Grade 80 (3rd Mate), or Grade 81 (2nd Mate), based on education and experience.

This position is open on a rolling basis, and will remain open over the entire academic year. Successful applicants may be offered temporary contracts between 1-3 months in duration, depending on scheduling and operational needs.
