Prince William Sound College (PWSC) is seeking qualified applicants for adjunct faculty positions in its Outdoor Leadership and Recreation programs and courses. PWSC is a one-of-a-kind institution of higher education with its main campus located in Valdez, Alaska. The main campus and its extension sites in Cordova and Copper Basin are set amidst some of the country’s most breathtaking scenery and rich cultural history. Valdez is located on the magnificent Prince William Sound, a fjord formed by retreating glaciers. It is a paradise for any outdoor enthusiast or nature lover. PWSC is part of the University of Alaska Anchorage which is independently accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU).

Adjunct faculty will develop and deliver instructional materials, including lectures, assignments, and assessments, in accordance with program curriculum and learning objectives. They will provide guidance and support to students, including mentoring, advising, and academic assistance. Adjuncts will be asked to work effectively with colleagues and students of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.

To thrive in this role, previous teaching experience, particularly in outdoor recreation or physical education, is highly desirable. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage and motivate students from diverse backgrounds. Commitment to promoting a positive and inclusive learning environment that fosters student success and achievement. Ability to collaborate with colleagues, industry partners, and stakeholders to enhance program quality and relevance.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants will be assessed based on their academic background, teaching experience, and potential to deliver high-quality instruction to undergraduate students. Relevant experience in the subject field is required, with past teaching experience preferred. Industry certification, as appropriate, is required. A Wilderness First Responder certification is required.

 A valid driver's license and clean driving record in compliance with UA safe driving criteria.

Position Details:

This position is located on the Prince William Sound College campus in Valdez. This is a part-time, for credit, adjunct faculty position. Salary is based on experience as well as the number of previous semesters teaching experience within the University of Alaska.

Successful applicants must provide official transcripts documenting academic credentials required for the position as a condition of employment. Applicants must attach a cover letter, resume, list of up to three references, and request a transcript that documents their graduate credits to be sent to the PWSC Office of Academic Affairs.

Need for adjunct instructors is determined on a per-semester basis. Successful acceptance into the adjunct pool does not guarantee an offer of a contract, though qualified applicants will be held in the pool for multiple semesters in the chance that a need for instructors in their discipline may arise. This is a pooled position, which means that the position remains open over the entire academic year.

This is an at-will, union represented adjunct position, and may be canceled based upon the needs of the university.
