The Mission of Design and Construction is to define, plan, and develop the infrastructure, land, and facilities to meet the needs of the university and the community, and to provide engineering support for the maintenance, operations, design, and construction divisions of Facilities Services. The functional units within Design and Construction are Project Management, Facilities Engineering and AutoCad Support.
The DDC team is responsible for planning and developing all UAF infrastructure and facilities to meet the educational and research needs of our vibrant university and community. Project Managers supervise a project team of employees while managing the development, design and construction of multiple capital improvement projects, coordinating project schedules and managing project budgets. No two projects are ever the same!
To succeed in this role, the candidate must have experience in managing capital construction projects. This includes program development, project planning, design, bidding, construction, and administration during the warranty period. Project Managers at UAF should possess a blend of knowledge and experience in budget management, procurement laws, modern construction techniques, and engineering judgment, all within a post-secondary education setting. Candidates should have experience managing multiple concurrent projects ranging in value from several thousand to several million dollars. Strong interpersonal and computer skills are also preferred.
The knowledge of a project manager encompasses a broad range of topics, including project programming, scheduling, the design of educational and research facilities, engineering and architectural principles, building and life safety codes, regulations, and statutes. They also need a comprehensive understanding of contract law, construction specifications, and technology, along with a strong grasp of project administration and budgeting. Additionally, extensive knowledge of architecture and engineering contracting procedures for public entities is essential.
Minimum Qualifications:
A Bachelor of Science degree in any engineering discipline or architecture, with professional registration in the State of Alaska is preferred, or the ability to obtain registration within 12 months of employment. A combination of advanced education and extensive experience in a design and construction management role is also acceptable, with a minimum of 7-10 years of experience as a construction contract manager in a department with functions similar to UAF Facilities Services Design and Construction.
A valid driver's license and clean driving record in compliance with UA Safe Driving Criteria.
Position Details:
This is a full-time, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 82, based on education and experience.
