The Alaska Climate Adaptation Science Center (AK CASC) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow in Climate Program Evaluation who is interested in exploring a program of research related to one or more of the following areas: 1) evaluating organizational approaches to science communication and actionable science, 2) capacity building in engaged research methods, 3) assessing research-practice partnerships or boundary spanning, or 4) investigating relationships between inputs and actionable science outcomes (i.e., increasing the value and use of evidence for decision making to improve practice, programs and policy).

The postdoctoral fellow will participate fully in research and related scholarly activities including leading research and evaluation initiatives, partnership development and maintenance, program design and development, grant writing, training and capacity building, knowledge mobilization (e.g., publications, presentations), and project management.

The postdoctoral fellow will be offered a supportive environment under the supervision of Dr. Kristin Timm (AK CASC Co-PI) in close collaboration with AK CASC leadership, that emphasizes growing research skills, creative and innovative thinking, while working independently and collaboratively within the full AK CASC team.

Duties include:
● Conduct one or more independently led, collaboratively designed evaluation or research projects
● Provides expertise in evaluation design and methodology
● Working with members of the AK CASC team, co-creates evaluation frameworks and monitors research activity and program impacts
● Design research studies, including developing research questions, hypotheses, and methodologies
● Collect and analyze data using quantitative and/or qualitative research methods, such as surveys, interviews, or using other methods
● Interpret research findings and contribute to academic publications, including journal articles, conference presentations, and book chapters
● Supports collaborative work with partners (community, government, and/or academic)
● Assist in grant writing and project management, including preparing progress reports, budgets, and discussing research implications on program design
● Participate in academic seminars, workshops, and conferences to present research findings and engage with the broader scholarly community
● Engage in outreach activities, such as public lectures, community events, or media interviews, to disseminate research findings to non-academic audiences
● Stay current with developments in the field by reading relevant literature, attending professional conferences, and networking with colleagues in the field
● Develops and implements capacity-building opportunities in evaluation research

The Alaska Climate Adaptation Science Center (https://akcasc.org/) is funded through a five-year cooperative agreement with the USGS and is one of nine regional Climate Adaptation Science Centers that provide tools and information to develop and execute management strategies that address the impacts of climate change on natural and cultural resources.

The AK CASC is based at the International Arctic Research Center (IARC) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in Fairbanks, Alaska. IARC’s mission is understanding the Arctic to make a difference. IARC is a highly productive, interdisciplinary research center home to over 100 natural, physical, social scientists, and humanities experts, several engaged research programs, and leaders in Alaska climate research, science engagement, and climate modeling. With interdisciplinary training, diverse perspectives, work life balance, and career development being top priorities at IARC, the postdoctoral fellow will have access to opportunities to build their skills and networks to pursue future careers in research, government, and beyond.

To thrive in this role, applicants must have a PhD and academic training in the social sciences. We seek candidates with a strong interest or experience working in transdisciplinary teams and using engaged research methods. The successful applicant is enthusiastic about making meaningful contributions through their research and working in a highly collaborative environment. We seek applicants that can demonstrate creativity, initiative, and strong oral and written communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in a relevant discipline (anthropology, sociology, human geography, psychology, political science, science and technology studies, public policy and planning, environmental studies, evaluation science, etc.) and 5 years of progressive research experience in a field relevant to the research. Demonstrated experience with social science research methods (e.g., interview, survey, comparative case studies, participant action, community-based research). Experience conducting research in the context of climate change impacts and/or adaptation is preferred.

Position Details:

This position is located on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus in Fairbanks, or remote within Alaska, this is a full-time, term-funded, exempt faculty position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package.
