The Student Health and Counseling Center (SHCC) at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) is seeking to employ a Medical Office Specialist. The successful applicant will join a team of dedicated health care professionals serving University of Alaska Anchorage students in a fast paced, on-campus location, with a focus in the areas of primary physical, mental health, public health, prevention, and health promotion services. The Medical Office Specialist position is a full time benefitted position working in the UAA Student Health and Counseling Center. This position will be responsible for billing and coding work, general clerical support, cash handling, and assisting with records management. This is a position that requires confidentiality and good computer skills. The Student Health and Counseling Center provides health care to the student population on the UAA campus located in Anchorage, Alaska. This position will support the medical staff with accurate completion of clerical duties.

To thrive in this role a successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge of medical scheduling, CPT and ICD 10 coding, third party insurance billing, and HIPAA and FERPA regulation. Additionally this position will require the ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and the community. You will need excellent time management, the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, and have good computer skills to be able to utilize medical office equipment and programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Google Suite, electronic health record systems, and fax and copier machines.

Medical billing and or coding certification is not required but preferred.

Typical experience and training in customer service, communication, confidentiality, critical thinking, problem solving, basic office skills, and computer database software.

Minimum Qualifications:

Some college coursework and one year experience related to program specialty, or an equivalent combination of training and experience; OR three years of progressively responsible office/administrative experience.

Medical billing and or coding certification required OR 2 years of equivalent experience working in a fast paced medical office environment or similar role with experience in customer service, communication, confidentiality, critical thinking, problem solving, basic office skills, and computer database software is preferred. Medical billing and or coding certification is not required but preferred.

Position Details:

This is a full-time, non-exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 77, based on education and experience.
