Marine Technicians and IT Analysts serve versatile roles with Sikuliaq, therefore we are seeking applicants with diverse backgrounds and skill sets. Duties:

  • Responsible for the operations and maintenance of electronic systems aboard the R/V Sikuliaq. This may include new installations, field calibrations, as well as troubleshooting and repairing instrumentation. Responsible for the operation of Data Acquisition Systems (DAS), Local Area Network (LAN), and all computers and peripherals.

  • Acts as the electronics, communications, IT and science systems coordinator for all deployments of equipment off the ship.

  • Responsible for all facets of safety for science operations, on the deck and in the lab. This includes maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring safety is the highest priority in the workplace.. 

  • Assists in implementing upgrades to the oceanographic, meteorological, communications, information technology and other shipboard electronic and computer systems.

  • Proactive in developing and improving shipboard documentation and standard operating procedures..

  • Operates and maintains the following oceanographic systems: SeaBird CTD rosette, Kongsberg hull-mounted echosounders, underway seawater and meteorological sampling sensors, overboard sampling equipment to collect sediment or plankton, navigation and timing systems, gravimeter, and cameras. Ability to operate and maintain oceanographic winches, seawater systems, and laboratory equipment is preferred.

  • Terminates cables, in particular electrical and optical splicing of oceanographic subsea cables, as well as attaching mechanical strength members.

  • Use basic hand and power tools.

  • Use test equipment such as a multimeter, oscilloscope, megohmmeter, and optical time domain reflectometer.

  • Provides network administration on Linux, Macintosh, and Windows platforms.

  • Responsible for troubleshooting and recovery of system outages/interruptions.

  • Creates computer accounts for users.

  • Maintains the network operating system and hardware to the most current approved levels.

  • Responsible for the quality control/assurance of data collection and archiving of data.

  • Maintains and operates satellite, UHF/VHF, internal communications, and CCTV system.

  • Interacts with the ship’s crew, science party, and fellow technicians in a professional and tactful manner.

  • May assist with special projects or other duties as assigned by the Science Operations Manager, IT Manager, or Senior Marine Technician.

Position requires lifting of at least 50 lbs and strenuous physical activity both indoors and outdoors.
Must be able to climb tall towers and masts, work in confined spaces, and work in cold environments.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor degree from an accredited college in a related discipline and two years of professional experience*, or equivalent experience/combined education. The hiring manager’s assessment of adequate skill level may be accepted in lieu of the degree or experience requirement.
*Experience includes the installation, operation, and maintenance of electronic systems, with a focus on problem solving and quality control.

Research vessel or field work experience preferred, but not required.

Prefer experience with:
scientific sensors and data collection.
troubleshooting and repair of equipment.
working in a dynamic team-oriented environment.
electrical power systems.

VMWare virtualization infrastructure
Cisco iOS
NewTec satellite modems and Intellian VSAT antennas

Position Details:

This is a temporary position, grade 79. Position is eligible for overtime and may receive additional benefits if sailing on Sikuliaq.

The work location for this position is aboard the Research Vessel Sikuliaq. Travel arrangements to/from the vessel are covered by the Seward Marine Center. Applicants from any geographic area within the United States are encouraged to apply, and relocation will not be required. Remote work may also be possible.

This position is open on a rolling basis, and will remain open indefinitely. Successful applicants may be offered temporary contracts between 1-3 months in duration, depending on scheduling and operational needs.
