The UAF Fire Department’s Fire Marshal Office is immediately recruiting for one student who is either a Junior or Senior as measured by credit accumulation and in good academic standing, and is enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours. Preference will be given to the student who has a background of study as it relates to fire science as it applies to building sciences and technologies OR building engineering sciences and technologies OR public education. This is in-office and a term employment through the end of the 2026 Spring semester with an opportunity to extend through Summer 2026 and into the following school year - maximum of two-year employment, DEPENDENT ON FUNDING. Work hours will be determined in agreement between the candidate and the Fire Marshal, especially to accommodate class schedules.

ABOUT THIS POSITION:

Depending on the background of the student and their desired path after graduation, their primary duties will be related to building sciences and technology OR public fire and life safety education.

For Students interested in the building sciences and technology, under the guidance and supervision of the Fire Marshal, job duties will be the following:

• Learning and applying basic concepts of the building and fire codes and standards
• Accompany the fire marshals on fire inspections and other field work and assist as
   needed
• Surveying buildings, gathering information from buildings and their systems, and
   interpreting those findings
• Entering findings into University Fire Department’s Report Management System for
   pre-incident surveys or fire inspections
• Will study the legal application of building and fire codes, their referenced standards
   and how they’re applied in the State of Alaska
• May be offered the opportunity to test for entry certification of choice from the
   International Code Council
• A strong reference and support for a beginning career job search in or related to this
  field of work

For candidates interested in public fire and life safety education, under the guidance and supervision of the Fire Marshal, the primary  duties will be the following:

• Develop or revise existing department lesson plans in accordance with current
   industry accepted adult, adolescent or youth learning theories and practices which
   inform and affect reduction of risk from injury or fire
• Following the lesson plans, develop and deliver instruction to targeted risk populations
   using current industry accepted adult, adolescent , or youth learning theories and
   practices. Coordinate this delivery with available department staff resources. Deliver
   is in-person preferred, but digital delivery may be explored.
• May provide training, guidance, and assistance to operations staff for delivery of
   programs as it relates to basic educational theory and practices
• May be offered the opportunity for entry level, nationally recognized, certification as a
   Public Fire and Life Safety Educator 1 or equivalent
• A strong reference and support for a beginning career job search in or related to this
   field of work

TO THRIVE IN THIS POSITION:

The candidate must have organizational skills and technology skills and knowledge of emergency management and/or fire service operations and management commensurate with the Bachelor of Emergency Management or Associate of Fire Sciences curriculum or other UAF approved closely related interdisciplinary curriculum; strong communication skills; proficient in Microsoft Office suite; general proficiency with Windows or Apple or web-based applications; strong organizational skills; and the ability to be flexible and reliable.

Minimum Qualifications:

The student will be required to maintain enrollment of at least 12 credit hours. Preference will be given to a student who has a background of study as it relates to fire science as it applies to building sciences and technologies OR building engineering sciences and technologies OR public education.

The applicant’s curricular history in the BEM, AFS, or closely related interdisciplinary curriculum, to include Building Sciences degree and Teaching & Education Sciences, will be evaluated according to project work priorities; a student intern will be chosen that has completed or has enrolled in coursework that suits the work to be performed.

REQUIRED: 2.0 Cumulative GPA or above; once hired, student employees must maintain a 2.0 semester/cumulative grade point average (GPA) and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours of University coursework per regular semester.

The successful candidate must have a valid Alaska driver's license and pass a Criminal Background Check and Clean Driving History/Record (MVR).


NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IN THE FIRE SERVICE IS REQUIRED.


Position Details:

This position is located on the UAF Troth Yeddha' campus in Fairbanks, Alaska.  This is a part-time, non-exempt student position. New hires will be placed at $15.00 an hour and working up to 20 hours a week in the office.
