Position Summary:
The Alaska Earthquake Center (AEC) is seeking one or more motivated individuals to fill Field Engineer positions. We are looking for people who are passionate about engineering and science and have experience working in the field. You will be responsible for planning and conducting field maintenance campaigns for our network of 250 monitoring stations across Alaska. If you are comfortable working independently and enjoy being outdoors, we want to hear from you. Additional Position Information:
The Alaska Earthquake Center is a cooperative environment where projects and operations are executed by well-empowered collaborative teams. The duties of the Field Engineer include field installation and troubleshooting of scientific monitoring equipment, monitoring the performance of remote field stations, testing of hardware systems, and configuration of data acquisition and communication devices. During the field season (May-October), this position will be participating in field campaigns in remote conditions and will have extensive opportunities to travel to all regions of Alaska.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: General:
  • Ability to adapt to conditions and make sound judgments independently in a remote setting.
  • Professional written and oral communication skills.
  • Advanced outdoor leadership skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of research methods and analytical procedures.
  • Proven ability to develop models for use by other team members.
  • Experience in compiling and communicating project reports, and/or publications.
  • Experience in remote fieldwork, including lifting heavy loads and working in inclement conditions.
  • Advanced knowledge of DC power systems.
  • Familiarity with Spice, Matlab, or related circuit simulation software tools.
  • Advanced knowledge of DC power systems, photovoltaics, and lithium battery technology.
  • Advanced knowledge of IP-based satellite communications Systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of the fundamentals of radio wave propagation.
Required Experience & Education:

M.S. in engineering or related discipline and two years research experience at the postgraduate level in a field relevant to the research, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Experience in field operations to install and/or maintain scientific equipment and/or equivalent education.

Valid driver's license and clean driving record in compliance with UA safe driving criteria.

Salary Information:

This position is full-time, Grade 80, term-funded, exempt, 12-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, based on education and experience.

Special Instructions to Applicants:

This position will be physically located at the UAF campus in Fairbanks, Alaska. The successful finalist will be expected to report to duty at the UAF office on the first day of employment.
