UA Federal Relations seeks an intern for a 10-week summer 2025 internship. Current undergraduate students within the University of Alaska system with an interest in government relations or federal policy are encouraged to apply. This is a paid internship at a rate of $17.67 per hour.

The Federal Relations Summer Intern will be integrated into the UA federal relations team in Washington, D.C., performing duties to assist in advocating for UA’s federal priorities. This 10-week internship will introduce an overview of government relations and an understanding of the federal policymaking process. The Federal Relations team works to share the UA system’s priorities with Congress, working with the Alaska Delegation and staff as well as Senate and House Committees, and other federal agencies.

The intern will gain insights into the operations of the federal relations team and the benefits it brings to the University of Alaska (UA) System. They will have the opportunity to learn about the workings of Congress and the Alaska Delegation. Additionally, the intern will have the flexibility to explore their own areas of interest within federal policy.

The intern will report to the Assistant Director of Federal Relations with support from the Executive Director of Federal Relations. The Assistant Director will be the daily point of contact for the intern, as well as assign duties and projects throughout the internship. Instruction materials and housing options will be provided to the intern well before arriving in DC.

To thrive in this role, the intern must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to follow detailed instructions and meet deadlines, the capability to work both independently and as part of a team, and must be organized and detail-oriented.

Office hours are Monday to Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM (EST). The office is located in The Hall of the States, which is centrally situated near The Hill and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The intern will have the opportunity to attend Congressional hearings, events, and meetings in the area that relate to UA priorities or are of personal interest.

Minimum Qualifications:

Current undergraduate student enrolled at one of the three universities in the University of Alaska System, interested in government relations or federal policy.

Position Details:

This position is located in Washington, D.C., within the UA Office of Government Relations, Federal Relations. It is a full-time, 10-week non-exempt position that pays an hourly rate of $17.67. The hiring department will cover the costs of housing and roundtrip flights from Alaska to Washington, D.C.

The chosen applicant is responsible for requesting credit for this internship through their department. Should their program require an affiliate agreement or internship contract, the Assistant Director of Federal Relations will be the point of contact as the intern coordinator and will work with the intern to create a proposed plan that satisfies the requirements set out by the intern’s academic department.
