The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) College of Health is searching for a full-time administrator for its Alaska Child Welfare Academy, a principal center for advancing child welfare practice across the State of Alaska. The Academy is devoted to the professional development of practitioners in the areas of child and family well-being, and child welfare social services. The incumbent will lead the rechartering of the Academy through the broadening of mission, aims, instructional programs, and contracts supporting practice advancement among professionals constituting the child welfare workforce in Alaska, including workforce supported by Alaska’s tribal organizations, ethnic associations, and organizations devoted to protecting and advancing the well-being of underserved populations. In addition, the position will secure and maintain accreditation of the Academy by a nationally recognized source. Residence in Alaska or relocation to the state is a requirement of the position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Training Expertise: Apply your knowledge of training and adult learning theory to design and deliver impactful training programs.
  • Subject Matter Knowledge: Leverage your experience in child welfare to address the unique needs of professionals in this critical field.
  • Grant and Contract Management: Utilize your understanding of grant and contract procurement processes to secure resources and funding for training initiatives.
  • Workforce Development: Recruit, hire, and supervise a diverse and talented workforce to meet the child welfare training needs of the state.
  • Collaboration: Build and maintain strong partnerships with universities, community organizations, and state stakeholders to enhance program effectiveness and ensure alignment with key objectives.


The Child Welfare Academy is a unit within the School of Social Work, College of Health.

As the Child Welfare Director, the candidate will need to be passionate and well-informed about child welfare and adult education. They should be comfortable leading a team of qualified trainers who provide skilled trainings and programs that address the needs of the state’s child welfare workforce and utilize the latest in training standards and technologies. The right candidate will be comfortable negotiating contracts and representing the Child Welfare Academy (CWA) at the university, community, and state levels. They will manage documentation, hire staff, and provide supervision to a diverse workforce. They can procure grants and contracts to fund the CWA and ensure compliance with university and budgetary protocols.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master of Social Work (MSW) or Master's degree in related field and five years progressively responsible experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Minimum of three years of experience in child welfare practice and administration.

Position Details:

This is a full-time, term-funded, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 83, based on education and experience.
