Why Join This Team?

This is an opportunity to have a direct impact on the technology that supports students, faculty, researchers, and staff across the entire University of Alaska system. The person in this role will help shape the future of our infrastructure by modernizing cloud and on-premises platforms, reducing technical debt, improving automation, and helping drive strategic technology initiatives across a complex enterprise environment.

This is not a role where you are responsible for a single technology stack or a narrowly defined set of tasks. The engineer we hire will have significant ownership, autonomy, and influence over the solutions we implement. You will work closely with senior engineers and leadership to evaluate technologies, solve difficult technical challenges, and help define the direction of our platform engineering and cloud strategy.

Our environment includes cloud services, VMware, NetApp, Active Directory, automation platforms, identity services, enterprise applications, and critical infrastructure supporting thousands of users across multiple campuses. If you enjoy solving complex problems, working across a broad technology landscape, and seeing the direct results of your work, this role offers opportunities that are difficult to find in larger organizations where responsibilities are often highly specialized.

We are looking for an experienced engineer who wants to build, improve, and modernize systems rather than simply maintain them. The work is challenging, the problems are real, and the impact of your contributions will be visible across the university.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in a relevant field (i.e. Information Technology or other related field) OR an equivalent combination of training and experience and at least four years of advanced experience (to include: advanced experience designing and supporting enterprise infrastructure across cloud and/or on-prem (hybrid) environments). The ideal candidate will have approximately 10 or more years of professional experience and a demonstrated history of independently designing, implementing, and supporting complex enterprise technology environments.

Position Details:

This is a full-time, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 82. Final salary placement is based on education and experience.

A complete application will include a resume, cover letter, and contact information for three professional references.

We review applications on a rolling basis. Because we may close the posting once a sufficient pool of qualified candidates is established, we encourage early submission. Please note that once a viable pool is identified, further applications may not be reviewed.

This is a remote position located in the United States; you are required to work Alaska Time Zone hours.

The University of Alaska (UA) reserves the right to require employees to work on-site at the UA facilities. Hybrid and remote work may be approved for employees based in Alaska at the University's discretion. Remote work for employees based outside the State of Alaska may be approved only in exceptional circumstances or when required by the position's job duties.
