As a communicating science intern, you’ll have the exciting opportunity to work with scientists and gain hands-on training and experience in translating scientific concepts into accessible and engaging content for diverse audiences. The Alaska Climate Adaptation Science Center seeks two interns for a 10-week summer 2024 internship from June 10, 2024 – August 9, 2024. Current or recently graduated undergraduate students with an interest in science and society, science communication, or science policy are encouraged to apply. Housing in Fairbanks, Alaska and travel to Anchorage and field research sites during the internship will be provided. This is a paid internship at $17.81/hr.

During this unique, new 10-week internship you’ll work with a team of USGS Alaska Science Center scientists and Alaska Climate Adaptation Science Center science communication experts to support research activities (in ecology, biology, environmental science) and generate creative and innovate communication products in a supportive, semi-structured environment. During this internship, you’ll gain firsthand experience with field research methods and data analysis. You’ll also learn about public outreach and science communication, and work with a team to produce one or more science communication projects. The intern will report to Drs. Kristin Timm (UAF) and Dr. John Pearce (USGS) and will build professional experiences and connections with both University and USGS research professionals.

To thrive in this role, you must be an upper level undergraduate or a recently graduate, and excited about learning more about science communication, and passionate about science. The successful intern will also have excellent written and oral communication skills; the ability to follow detailed instructions and meet deadlines; the ability to work independently and as a team; and be organized and detail oriented.

Minimum Qualifications:

Position Details:

This position is located on the UAF campus in Fairbanks, and it is a flexible on-site/hybrid work arrangements may be considered in accordance with UA regulations and the type of work assigned. This is a part-time, non-exempt hourly-temporary position during the Summer 2024.
