The Department of Art is looking to hire a highly motivated student to be a Ceramic Studio Technician Assistant. This position will be 10 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters.  A successful candidate will assist in the upkeep and overall operations of the wheel throwing (GHH) and hand building (FAB) ceramic studios. This is a great opportunity to learn studio/shop management skills.


Responsibilities include:

Glaze Lab Assistant

  • Stock materials
  • Update SDS Binders
  • Mix glazes and slips as needed
  • Test glaze recipes

Assist in updating Ceramic Studio Safety Guide,

  • Revise equipment operation manuals
  • Ensure compliance with University policies and procedures

Repair and refresh studio furniture

Assist with gas kiln firings

Clean studios as needed

To thrive in this roll, the candidate must have the following skills:

  • Comfortable with operation of simple hand tools such as drills, sanders, and hammers while following appropriate safety guidelines and the use of personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Demonstrates clear communication skills–both written and in person–and be able to work with a wide variety of community members including: staff, faculty and students
  • Proficient in Email, Microsoft Office Suite and Google Docs.
  • Ability to complete some of the responsibilities as outlined in this job description in a self-directed manor without close supervision.

Minimum Qualifications:

To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must:

a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or
b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and
c. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or is a newly enrolled student.

This position requires the ability to lift 50 lbs., a thorough understanding of daily operations of a ceramics studio, and an understanding of lab safety procedures.

Position Details:

This position is located on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus in Anchorage, Alaska. This is a part-time, Student Assistant 2 position with a minimum pay of $16.52/hour.
