An Assistant Resident Director (ARD) is a para-professional, live-in member of the Department of Residence Life who reports to a full-time Resident Director. ARDs coordinate with their supervisor to ensure administrative records, which may include occupancy accuracy, staff supervision and training, maintenance requests and follow up, budgets, key control and security, activity logs, space management, guest housing management, and programming management.

Duties:

The primary focus of an Assistant Resident Director is to ensure that Residence Life areas are safe, secure, and clean environments that support students growth, development and pursuit of an educational degree. In accordance with this focus, Assistant Resident Directors facilitate programs that are responsive to student needs, develop a positive community, and align with the academic mission of the university.

Assistant Resident Directors provide leadership in creating a positive residence environment which fosters understanding, appreciation and celebration of diversity among residents and staff.

Assistant Resident Directors also enforce the University and the Department of Residence Life's policies and procedures holding students accountable for their behavior.

Assistant Resident Directors may supervise Resident Assistants and must maintain a regular, visible presence in the area of assignment.

Assistant Resident Director serves as a live-in administrator for one area and is responsible for assisting the Resident Director with daily operation, management, and supervision of hall(s) and apartments.

This job description identifies the key responsibilities and expectations for performance. It cannot encompass all specific job tasks that an employee may be required to perform.

Employees are required to follow any other job-related instructions and perform job-related duties as may be reasonably assigned by their supervisor.

Time Commitment

  • 20 hrs/week
  • Up to five (5) days of duty in a month

Supervision & Staff Development (if applicable)

  • Attend programs and evening events on campus.
  • Assist in selection, training and supervision of Resident Assistants
  • Hold regular formal supervision meetings with individual staff
  • Conduct and attend weekly staff meetings
  • Assist in mid-year and/or year-end evaluations of student staff.
  • Schedule staff duty coverage from 7:00pm-8:00am in each residential area, and 24 hours on the weekend.

Community Development & Involvement

  • Advise and support staff in developing positive living communities.
  • Develop supportive relationships with the students in the residence halls and apartments.
  • Meet with students regarding personal, social and administrative, and academic concerns.
  • Develop an awareness of the broad scope of student needs in the residence hall(s) and apartments.
  • Provide all students with information about residence hall and campus services, safety and security issues, University and residence life policies, and their respective reporting systems.
  • Encourage student involvement in traditional and non-traditional leadership activities.
  • Promote understanding and acceptance of diverse cultures in the residential community.
  • Live in the community you’re assigned during your period of employment. You may be out of your building two (2) nights a week, unless otherwise approved by your supervisor.

Policy & Crisis Management

  • Assist students with mediation and conflict resolution.
  • Present and interpret Residence Hall Policies and the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Inquire and document violations of the Residence Life Handbook and the Student Code of Conduct immediately via Maxient.
  • Confront and immediately report incidents of harassment, discrimination, Title IX violations, DE&C, Minors on Campus, and intimidation against and by students, staff, and faculty.
  • Counsel students with personal and academic concerns and refer as appropriate.
  • Respond to welfare concerns and requests for UAF students or UAF residential people.

Training

  • Training may extend into the evening and weekend hours
  • ARDs will assist with the development and implementation of training on an ongoing and as-needed basis.

Residence Life Management Team

  • Assist with the summer to fall transition, fall to winter break transition, and spring to summer transition.
  • Collaborate with other offices and groups to increase the quality of programs and services.
  • Assist in the planning of and be present for annual events on campus such as move-in, hall opening, hall closing, Tradition weekends, etc.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate and up to date administrative records including data on occupancy, conduct and care, maintenance, key control, activity logs and student information, programs, budgets etc.
  • Assess and report repairs and/or damage to RL Facilities through Housing Cloud for proper actions or create work orders and follow up to ensure it has been completed
  • Assist with the opening and closing of residence halls to ensure all students check in and out, all paperwork is completed and turned in, final reports for budget are completed for each process.
  • Check email and voicemail daily, and respond as requested.
  • Other duties and projects may be assigned by your supervisor

Typical Experience

Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicants must have a cumulative and semester grade point average of 2.5 or above at the time of application and start date.
  • This recruitment is open to undergraduate students only
  • Applicants must have unrestricted employment authorization in the United States.
 

Required Education or Training

At least one semester of Residence Life experience

  • Applicants must complete all UAF employee Required Training (including Safety training, Title IX, Protection of minors, Campus Security Authority, and FERPA) within two weeks of their hire date.
  • Must be a full-time student at UA (12 undergraduate credits).
  • All applicants will have their University Student Conduct record reviewed, and this review will be taken into consideration during the application/interview process.

Salary Information

  • This is a full-time Student Position with a bi-weekly stipend amount of $448.00 ($16.00/hr)
